nas nfs mounts

Hi.

I've got to move from a netapps fas960 to a storevault s500.

I've noticed that the s500 needs all nfs shares to be under a single volume /vol/exports, unlike the fas960.

Now i have 6 L2000's running informix db's that at the moment have 5 directories each that are mounted on seperate volumes on the fas960.

My question is should i still use 5 seperate nfs mounts for each server or just have a single mount per server with all the the data directories under that.

I dont know which will give the best performance on the s500, allthough the second option will be less messy from the nas point of view.
Unfortunatley i dont have time for testing both options :(

Cheers

George

Re: nas nfs mounts

Shalom George,

Well, we really don't know what the underlying setup of the s500 is.

If I were to guess that its a big raid 5 configuration with as many disks as possible in it, then that is probably an optimal configuration. More heads mean faster read times in general, if the system is not under write stress.

In this circumstance, I'd ask the s500 folks the impact of carving things up the way you are used to. They probably have a reason for what they are doing. The question to ask is is it a good reason or were they ignorant of real world performance issues.
