My server takes too much time in reboot,
then one of my friend told me that this is because Navisphere agent is not running,
The start up scripts are in place but the process is not running. The start up scripts are
# ls -al /sbin/rc2.d/S98agent
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 18 Jul 9 2005 /sbin/rc2.d/S98agent -> /sbin/init.d/agent
# ls -al /sbin/init.d/agent
-rwxr--r-- 1 root sys 1560 Aug 6 2002 /sbin/init.d/agent
I do not know why this did not start
I have started it using /sbin/init.d/agent command, now its it is running,
# ps -ef | grep -i naviagent*
root 24001 23974 0 06:08:25 pts/7 0:00 grep -i naviagent*
#/sbin/init.d/agent
# ps -ef | grep -i naviagent*
root 23724 1 0 05:50:11 ? 0:00 /opt/Navisphere/bin/naviagent -f /etc/Navisphere/agent.config
root 24001 23974 0 06:08:25 pts/7 0:00 grep -i naviagent*
now if i reboot this server, will it take too much time or not?
should i change in startup script, if yes,
please let me know in which file should i make changes and what changes should i make/
thanks
vipin

Solutioncan you please check the /etc/rc.log file for any messages regarding S98agent.
Does the script require any environment variables or PATHs ?
Compare your script to /etc/init.d/template.
As a final step debug your script with set -x.

Re: Navisphere agent was not running
do a "more /etc/rc.log"
and in the beginning of the rc.log, u can find out
**************************************************
HP-UX Start-up in progress
Thu Jul 20 15:23:27 PDT 2006
**************************************************
and in the end of rc.log, u can find out like:
**************************************************
HP-UX run-level transition completed
Thu Jul 20 15:24:42 PDT 2006
**************************************************
from 15:23:27 to 15:24:42
so u can find out the time taken and some more information also.
u can disable some unwanted services in the start-up to reduce the start up time.

Re: Navisphere agent was not running
I would like to know what information your friend had to base his/her opinion, because I don't see it in this post.
I suggest throwing some code to display timestamp to /etc/rc.log during startup of he services and find out which service is delayed.
