Need expert HPUX/NFS help! mountd dies when accesses by remote machine

I've got a doozey of a problem on my hands.

On identical machines (C3600, HPUX 11.00, recent patch level, same patch level between them) this problem is occuring on one, but not on the other.

Whenever I do a "cd /net/computer_name" on any other HP machine, the rpc.mounts process on computer_name dies, and the monut fails. Re-starting /sbin/init.d/nfs.server does re-spawn the process, but further mount requests just kill it again.

And then, I patched my own workstation to the most recent patch bundle. I have the same excat problem. Mine is a B.11.00 A 9000/782.

We've tried logging mountd with no enlightening results. We've tried switching between autofs and automountd, we've tried NFS v3 and v2, but the same thing happens.

We do not spawn rpc.mountd from inetd.conf.

Any ideas, or someone with similar experience? We're working with HP on this but they can't find anything wrong.

Oops, logged on with a different account.

Also, this problem is affecting 4 systems out of about 30.

Hi,

Try starting your rpc.mountd with option '-e'. Check this thread for help:

Got the problem solved!
There was an entry for "dns" in the services: line in /etc/nsswitch.conf. Removing dns fixed mountd crashing.
