Need help for upgrade HPUX 11.0 to 11i and including using JFS3.3

Hi all,
I just need information for HPUX upgrade from 11.0 to 11i. I have to maintain JFS 3.3 file system after change to HPUX 11i. I'm know sure,Which is the best solution for me? Still running on JFS 3.3 or migrate data to Veritas file system or I can convert to Vertias file system. Please help me to solved this problem.

Regard,

First, the overwhelming consensus here at the Forums is to cold-install rather than upgrade. Then vgimport all your non-vg00 volume groups.

As far as the Veritas File System is concerned. I get the feeling that HP is backing off from adopting it and you would be better off to stick with JFS.

Hold on, JFS is the Veritas filesystem. You existing JFS filesystems will import and work just fine under 11.11. You will need to install OnlineJFS but that's it.

By the way, I have sucessfully converted many systems from 11.0 to 11.11; unlike the 10.20 to 11x upgrade, the 11.0 to 11.11 upgrade does work but iff (if and only if) you generously oversized your /stand and / LVOLS when you installed 11.0. If you left them at or near the default sizes, your upgrade is doomed. In that event, your vg00 stuff will be new but all other VG's/filesystems can be vgimported.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

I have JFS 3.3 installed on my 11.00 systems as an upgrade.

The vxfs filesystem that ships with HP-UX is licensed from Veritas.

There is no converstion process for the data files, whether you do the upgrade the Filesystem or choose to take your system to 11.11

I went to Hands on with 11i class last June in Atlanta. The success rate in HP's labs with systems that were identical was less than 70%.

This was not due to students not following instructions.

I can not emphasize enough the advantages of a cold 11.11(11i) insgtallation.

Hi Paruj:
We did the 11.0 to 11i upgrade and everything went great. We did have to increase /stand as stated, but if you follow the upgrade instructions, make sure the space you have is adequate - we had no problems. When you say maintain - do you have JFS file systems now - or are you migrating from HFS? Unclear on your question....

Re: Need help for upgrade HPUX 11.0 to 11i and including using JFS3.3

Hi Guys,

I just got some information from HP that they have JFS 3.5 and VXVM (Base feature) on 11i. And JFS 3.3 also can running on 11i ,too. But ,I don't know,What is the limitation of JFS 3.3 after I upgrade from 11.0 to 11i.

BTW,Could you please show me the benefit of cold/upgrade OS version.

Many thanks for you advise,

Re: Need help for upgrade HPUX 11.0 to 11i and including using JFS3.3

I have just upgrede-ux-ed three servers in the last month. Each of them required this procedure.

1. Run an Ignite tape expand / and /stand to make room for the upgrade.

2. mount the cdrom

3. upgrade-ux

4. wait for 5hrs.

I then installed the Online JFS update and the 12/02 11.11 Quality pack.

At that point I had upgraded several V-Class and an N-CLASS box. Previous to placing the first CD in the slot we replaced A3740A Fibre Channel cards with A5158AR cards in our V-CLass 2250.

It went smoothly last night as we split BCVs and everything normally while the process was started Post 5 P.M. and finished by 11:00 to have a second CD placed in the drive by our night operator. I continued CD #2
and it finished before morning, and the DBA's had the Database up at 6:00 A.M. for production work.

The Quality Pack install started at 4:40 A.M. and finished within an hour.

Hope the naration helps.

As a further note Last night was a dry run for measurements as to timing our production box upgrade time...

We do the Production box
6/18/03...

All,

Yes, I'm aware that JFS is Veritas - I assumed (when will I ever learn?) that we were referring to JFS vs VxVM. That seems to be the case and I'll stick by my statement: I wouldn't bother with VxVM.

I concur with Pete. We have seen very little benefit from moving to VXVM over JFS. As for the cold-install vs upgrade, the single biggest problem with upgrades is baggage. If you have some "quirks/bugs/etc" in the system that you have never been able to get resolved, Murphy will make sure they follow you to the upgraded OS version. If you do a carefully planned out cold install, they will disappear (of course to be replaced by even more annoying ones at a future date). Sorry, forgot to turn off RANT.
