Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi ... i have next doubt.

We suppose next case:
1.- Networking is very slow.
2.- Area lan networking is going to change an interface.

I'm managing 20 servers.

Lan area local not indicates change any interface: aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd ......

what do i must in this hp-ux servers?
is necesary give shutdown?
or is necessary disconnect the interface cards?

what do i must do?

Thanks, Mauales.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Usually a slow network is because of a mismatch between the settings on the switch and on the server, particularly in the case of a 100 Mb network. In order for this situation to work properly, both the switch and the lan card in the server must be forced to 100 MB FD (full duplex). This can be accomplished on the server with "lanadmin -X 100 FD 0" where 0 is the instance number of the lan card. To make this change permanent, you need to change the approriate configuration file. Use ioscan to determine the driver for your lan card, then edit the appropriate file:

btlan hpbtlanconf
btlan0 hpeisabtconf
btlan1 hpbasetconf
btlan3 hpbase100conf
btlan4 hpgsc100conf
btlan5 hppci100conf
btlan6 hpsppci100conf

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Make sure you have the right settings for your lan card matched to the network port - IE 100 Full Duplex

Here's a little script to check all your lan cards:

# cat /usr/local/bin/lancards
#!/usr/bin/sh
# script to check speed and settings of lan cards
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
ppas=`lanscan | awk '$3~/^[0-9]$/{print $3}' | xargs`
for i in $ppas
do
printf "Card at PPA %s - " $i
ipa=`ifconfig lan${i} 2>/dev/null | awk '{ip=$2}END{if(ip==""){printf("Not assigned")}else{printf("%s ",ip)}}'`
printf "IP Address: %15s- " "$ipa"
lanadmin -x $i 2>/dev/null | awk '{$1="";printf("%s",$0)}'
echo ""
done

Then compare to what your network group says the ports are.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi,

To be honest I am unable to understand your question.

But with what I understood is your network is slow and for that you are planning to add a new network card with more speed..!!

If that is the case you need to you must configure the card /etc/rc.config.d/netconf.

good to reboot after that.

If your case is after adding the new card, your server performance has gone down, you must check what is your Network e.g Thick/Thin ethernet or RJ45 ethernet. If yor network is former one ensure that you have not crossed more than 28 system in the same net.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Thanks, but i think i was not describe correctly the problem.

There are two areas: communications and technical support.

comunicatiion area told me: "we are going to do some changes which they have to see with the networking ..." this changes does not have any change with your lan1 or lan2 interface ..."
the doubt is: me like administrator, what do i must do ? only give a ping and check the result from console?
or do i have unplugged network wire?

Thanks ....Manuales.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi Manuales:

I'd look at your '/etc/rc.config.d/netconf'. Using the information there, ask questions to make sure that your default gateway address isn't going to change, for example.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Shouldn't have to do anything other then monitor your interfaces.

Also watch you syslog.log for error messages.

They say they are not changing lan1 and 2 - what are they changing?

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi Man,

If would like to add to JRF's comments, just ask them to ping/ftp to your system.

Also Once they complete their work, ask your applications team to run any interface jobs and see they are fine.

Good luck

I don't know what communication team did :0( and with more reason i uderstand now that i don't have to do something really? only monitoring systems ...

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi Friends ...
now, communication area will make some activities for the problem last week presented.

Problem was next:
The switch was blocked
The problem was next: a trunk port has problems (1GB UTP Port).
The Switch doesn´t have any available UTP port, however it has available F.O. ports.
now the solution is to configure and
connect the GBIC´s cards and F.O. ports.

i'm managment unix servers hp-ux, they said me: "... we need you are with us for any problem with unix servers and we need you do necessary activities in your servers for we make our activities ..."

My question again is:
do i have something in servers hp-ux?
or do i have only monitoring networking?
do i have shutdown server?
do i have disable interface lan1, lan2, etc (ifconfig lan1 down) ?

Thanks, Manuales .

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Well - sounds like it is going to be a network outage.

To be safe, it would be best to shutdown the applications )Oracle for example) that are running on your Unix servers.

Let them do their network change, then test connectivity to all your network cards prior to starting up your applications.

then, is necessary only shutdown all applications are living in the server without shutdown server, is correct?

That's right - server should be fine - no need to shutdown.

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Hi Mauales:

I agree with Geoff. I would gracefully shutdown any of your network-aware applications (including Oracle). That way there will be no aborted processes due to network connectivity loss.

You will probably find that your server lan interfaces will operate normally after loss of connectivity to the switch. At most you may see a "Lan Disaster" message on consoles and in the syslog.

Once the network downtime has finished, you could make sure that you can ping your servers and that your servers can ping other devices that are not on their network segment.

Regards!

Re: Nerwoking very slow ...lan area local will change an interface, what do i must do with my servers

Man,

During that time, your applications/interface may not work if they use the nework.

Leave your server as it is. Once the network is up, they will be up.

If you want to monitor check the sysog, ping, telnet once they are up..

Best luck
