Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

Hello all

I have a problem with my Netscape 4.79 on HP-UX 11.00. It doesn't save cookies. I enable option in Netscape "warn me before accepting a cookie" (also I select button "Accept all cookies"), so I really know, that webpage I access want to set cookies. The problem is that webpage I access won't run wihtout cookies :<(

What can cause this problem?
How can I enable logging or something like debug mode in my Netscape?

Thanks, for all replays.

Hi Joseph,

Check if you got java enabled, if you do -->
Always turn off (uncheck) the Java Plug-in option from Edit > Preference > Advanced

Hope it helps,

Robert-Jan.

Re: Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

Check preferences for the location of where Netscape saves files like cache and cookies. Then check permissions there. Some security program may have inadvertantly locked things up too tight there. Or the user does not have ownerhip of those locations.

website isn't running without java plugin.

I set cache dir to "/var/tmp" which has 777 permisions, but result is still the same - don't accept.

Re: Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

Harry,

If I didn???t know any better I would think that there was just a hint of bitterness in that statement.

Wait a minute??? bitterness from Harry???? Nahhhhhhh! Never happen ;^)

Perhaps you can explain how the browser from ???mozilla??? is supposed to fix the problem at hand. From what I have seen, Netscape uses a significant amount of code with the ???Mozilla??? name stamp on it in their applications as well.

I know that I am a bit confused on how this could change the issue that Joseph is having (and I would expect that I???m not the only one).

Thanks!

Re: Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

Try to delete the $HOME/.netscape directory and have netscape re-create it at launch.

It could be a bad file, or permissions on the settings/cache directory.

I have seen similar problems when people modify the $HOME/.netscape/preferences.js file, and dont know what they are doing.

Re: Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

John,

I'm actually posting this using mozilla from an hpux 11i box.

Mozilla 1.4a

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; HP-UX 9000/800; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030402

And it stores cookies like an elf :-))

BTW, netscape is dead, as AOL put a bullet in it's head last month. Long live Mozilla!

Re: Netscape 4.79, problems with cookies

Harry,

OK, my ignorance is really starting to flair up at this point.

One of the things that I like about the Netscape browser is the fact that I get to decide what cookies get stored on a per-site basis (actually, a per-cookie basis to be more precise) and have that decision retained so I don???t have to make it again. With all due respect, your statement that Mozilla ???stores cookies like an elf??? doesn???t impress me at all. If anything, it bothers me to think that the control that I have become accustomed to isn???t available.

I still don???t know just exactly how this push to go to Mozilla will solve the issues that Joseph is having with Netscape. I hate to say this, but the push to simply replace the product instead of resolving the issues that he is seeing is very reminiscent of an M$ attitude. They never want to fix anything, just reload or replace it.

Of course, that is just my humble, uneducated opinion. I could be wrong???

PS. AOL put a bullet in Netscape???s head??? Is there a link for more info on that? I knew they were rather self-destructive, but I wouldn???t have expected something that drastic from them???
