Netscape slow reading png-files

My netscape webbrowser is very slow in reading png files.
I have no webserver installed and therefor I am reading the file from the local fs. Still the file is read with 300 bytes/second.
When reading the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log from 10 Mb it is very fast. Does anyone have an idea why it is so slow on the png-files ?
The png-files were generated by mrtg and aprox 150 Kb large (4 pics on 1 page). The server is absolutely not busy !

Any help will be much apreciated !!

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Hi David,
I believe that Netscape does not handle PNG format natively? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
If I'm right, which 3rd party plug-in are you using?

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Netscape requires a plug-in for .png files...
should work...

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Hi,

The browser is reading the png-files. I know that you need at least have libpng, gd, etc installed. So that wouldn't be the problem right, as the png-files do apear, it just very slow.

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Hi David,

Speed may depend on the algorithms used by the plug-in.

If you can find the author of the plug-in then we may be able to find a "documented feature" about why it's so slow.

Could you try to find this info?

Ollie.

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

David,
Just to add few more points.

1. Try opening other png files of more size. Check the timing.

2. Try opening the same png file in another machine-netscape (may be M$ IE). Check the timing.

3. If there is any other machine with the same configuration try reading there also.

4. Run tusc on the netscape itself and see. I know this is tedious but you can use the -T option to trace the time for syscalls.

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Hi,

Sorry to give a link, but please look at this site. It looked very easy to me. They provide all the needed packages in a depot and pre-compiled !! All the info should be in there right ?

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Networking/Admin/mrtg-2.9.20/

Your help is very much apreciated !!!!

Tusc is showing a stop sometimes, so it looks like it's not doing a lot. The -T option does not show me extra info ?
All png-files (aprox 25 * 4) are read slowly. I am not able to try it on a different server, we have no further netscape's running.

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

David,
As per your prev thread, I believe the netscape version is 4.8 on hpux11. This problem may be with the plugin or the chatr output you posted in prev thread.

It may be trying to find in the unneccessary directories for the shared libraries. But, the shared lib once loaded, should not be a problem from the next time.

So, check the installed plugin for the netscape. It is under Help->About Plug ins.

check this site, if it helps you. (Mostly you would have seen this also).

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngapbr.html#nn

For tusc, if you dont give the format, it will print in the default format. Check the man pages.

There may be problems with the rendering engine of Netscape 4.8. I am not sure about this.

Another suggestion (but not good) is to scale down to Netscape 4.7, do a clean install and try out.

Have you tried opening other image formats like jpeg, etc.

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

Hi Umpathy,

Thanks for the advise. Indeed I read the docu already before.
When I look at the plugins (very good point :) I can see that jpeg, gif, etc is "handled by" "Netscape", PNG is in the list of applications as well but "Handled by" "Unknown prompt user".

When setting it to /usr/local/libpng/ or /usr/local/lib/libpng.sl it does not change anything.
Can you please do me a favour and see where PNG is Handled by in your config ? I see this under : Edit --> Preferences --> Navigator --> Applications

Re: Netscape slow reading png-files

David,
I use Mozilla on a Windows NT box. I can open the png files here, but when I went under the edit->prefernces->helper applications, none of them are listed execept text files using notepad.
But this browser loads all the types of images without any plugins!
Unfortunately, I dont know and have access to any hpux boxes having netscape installed. I will try to find some in the meantime.
