Re: Network Printer Installtion

Network Printer Installtion

Hi

I'm a System Administrator who is new to HP, in the procees of learning HP. I'm quiet comfortable in Solaris. I need to know how to install a Network Printer to one my HP-UX 11.0 server which is 32bit kernel. If anyone could guide step by step procedure to install the same I would be gratefull to them.
Please help me.

Re: Network Printer Installtion

I am not sure, from your question, if you are trying to build a "Print server" or there is already a server on the LAN that is serving print and you want to print from your HPUX box to that remote printer server. If the latter is the case, I would suggest that you run sam and get familiar with what it does. Sam is the Systems admin menu driven utility that comes on all HPUX systems. From sam you can add users and peripherals manage the system and even rebuild the kernel if needed. su to root and then type sam at the prompt. You will see sam areas and select "printers and plotter" - lp spooler - printers and plotters - actions - add remote printer/plotter and fill in the blanks. It is just that easy.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.

Re: Network Printer Installtion

i think you should take a look on JetDirect:
swlist | grep -i jet

if this line return nothing you have to install jetdirect it can be downloaded from software.hp.com

There should be a manual as well but else just do it though sam.

it is a software that you can also install on solar. system and hp-ux system , the install is easy and also the define of a network printer .

here is the link for download the file , please also read the info about the product , the command that you need to open is hppi and you will get a menu that will guide you how to install a network printer .

Re: Network Printer Installtion

Hi,

Pls check JetAdmin intalation:
#swlist -l product|grep JetAdmin

Default directory is: /opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin

You can obtain some help in the online manual:
#man jetadmin

If JetAdmin is installed, you must be go via /opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin command or other way is via SAM:
#sam
SAM/Printers and Ploters/LP Spooler/Printer and Plotters/Actions/Add Network-Based Printer/Plotter
This SAM way invokes the /opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin command.

Before any option, it is recommendable that you relate the printer address to their resolution name into the /etc/hosts file, i.e:

9.55.10.234 myprinter

I will recommend you to read this document but the information about JetAdmin is very poor and generic. http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/B3782-90716/B3782-90716_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/B3782-90716/00/01/106-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/B3782-90716/00/01/106-toc.html&searchterms=jetadmin%7cmanual%7cHP-UX&queryid=20021230-080620

Rgds.

Re: Network Printer Installtion

I tried using SAM and I'm getting the following error when i choose the option specified
The HP JetDirect printer software is not installed on your system |-+ |
|| | (neither the command "/opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin" nor the command | ^ |
|| | "/usr/lib/hpnp/admin/hpnpcfg" exist). Therefore, it is not possible | |
|| | to add a printer that is connected to an HP JetDirect interface.

Re: Network Printer Installtion

Download the JetDirect software found here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNum=J4189AA&prodName=hp+jd+printer+installer+for+hp-ux+11.x&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodTypeId=13037&prodSeriesId=27349

Use swinstall to install it
(/usr/sbin/swinstall)
Source Depot Type: Local Directory
Source Host name: (Local Host Name)
Source Depot Path: (Path to downloaded file/HP11e134.SD)

Right click on package then Mark for install.
Actions Install...

After installed run /opt/hpnpl/bin/hppi as root

choose option 1 Spooler Administration
then 1 Add printer to local spooler
enter printer name if it is in your /etc/hosts file otherwise enter th printers ip address.

Re: Network Printer Installtion

Hi

as i said download the package .

use the command swinstal -s /tmp/HP11e134.SD

install the software and then you can use the command hppi or define it from SAM .

the SAM is trying to oper. the hppi , so it sill fail if you didnt install it allready .

Re: Network Printer Installtion

Have you attached the printer to the network and assigned an IP address yet? Once completed, I would update the host file with a friendly name to go along with the ip address that you assigned to the printer.

The SAM utility is an easy way to get the printer setup - After the JetAdmin product has been installed to the HP box, start SAM - go to Printers & Plotters, LP Spooler, Printers & plotters (again), Actions - Add NETWORK based printer/plotter (this starts JetAdmin), pick option to Add a Printer, input the friendly name that you defined in the host file for the printer, and JetAdmin should walk you the rest of the way.

This will give the ability to LP files and such...

Re: Network Printer Installtion

Two ways
First - use the command line - the same lpadmin commands you use on Solaris work on HPUX.
lpshut
lpadmin
accept
enable
lpsched -

If you do not want to use command line, and have been using solstice, or admintool, then the equivalent (but better, because HP is much better than that sun stuff) is SAM.

If you don't like that answer, then download this package...
