Network printer

Hi all,
i wanna add a network printer on my hp.
Using Jetadmin, i have no response from printer.
If i try to ping it, the printer is on.
If i try to telnet it, i have:
Trying...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
What does this mean? How can i add this printer?
Thanks Tarek

Re: Network printer

HI:

First of all, does this printer have aJetDirect card or an External JetDirect? If not, you are wasting your time with JetAdmin.

Most of the other network interface will respond to a telnet on port 23 but not all. I would first simply power the printer/network interface off and on and retry.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Network printer

I'm sure that the printer is a network printer (because of i ping it !!) but i don't know if it has jetdirect card. The printer is not where i am phisically. How can i know if it has jetdirect or not?
Thanks again.

Re: Network printer

Hi:

Unfortunately there is no common way to determine the type of network card you have. Most manufacturers support the lpd protocol so I would next try to set this up as a remote printer (Add Remote Printer/Plotter under SAM).

The bad news is that some of these require specific 'Remote Printer Names (or Queue Names)' for specific modes (e.g. TEXT,BINARY or BIN) but often any name will work. The hostname used is the hostname of the remote printer.

Re: Network printer

Tarek,

Make sure the IP address you are pinging/telnetting is that of the printer.
To check this, remove the network cable
from the printer and try pinging to confirm
it. Once you are certain of this, look
at the Network card the printer is using.
A self-test printout from the printer will
give you the details.
Also, make sure the system is on the
same subnet as that of the printer to which
you are trying to set up.

Re: Network printer

Hi Tarek,

If you are able to ping to the printer, you should be able to do a telnet to the printer too. Make sure your gateway settings and ip resolving is okay. You can do a "nslookup" to confirm that the ip is getting resolved.

When you do a telnet you should get a screen that says,

Please press [Return] two times, to initialise telnet configuration. For Help type "?"

Press Return two times and then press "/" to see the present configuration on the printer.

Hope this helps.

thanks

Re: Network printer

First of all the printer is a Canon and not an HP. Model Canon GP 250, maybe this is the problem.
Ip is right, nslookup resolves it but i still can't telnet. How can i add it on hp systems if it isn't an HP printer?

Re: Network printer

Tarek, may I suggest you bring up a browser and plug in the IP address? Some external boxes and some printers have a browser interface that lets you configure and test them.

Other than that, go to the cannon website and download the manual. *If* the printer has a built in network card then instructions will be found there, else you need someone to get an eyeball on the printer and tell you the make and model of the external box that serves as an interface to the network.
