Network Printers going Disabled at any given oppotunity.

Dear all,

I've inhereted a server with lots (30+) remote networked printers, setup with HP jetdirect and TIFF zip print cards in. The printers have been all setup up via sam as far as I can see, but they all seem to have the same problem (intermitantly of course).

Should any sort of printer discrepancy occur: out of paper, jammed, network slow, turned off and on ..etc the servers queue gets set to disabled.

Apart from being very annoying, I wondered if this was a feature or patch worthy and if anyone else has experianced similar problems with this type of setup?

The server is an L3000 5 way with 6 gig of memory and 70 gig of disk running HPUX11.00. Server loading isn't an issue, but the problem only came to light after an upgrade from 10.20 (increased the problem significantly).

Once again,

Any tips, pointers, manual refs etc always warmly received!!!!

Cheers,

Have you got the latest "lpspool cumulative patch" installed. The patch is :-
PHCO_25110
It's suppose to fix a lot of problems.

Thanks for the patch advice, it turns out that the server only has a very old lpspooler patch on, I'll install the one you linked and report back!!!

Thanks again,

Attached is a doc I have on "lp spooler hang troubleshooting". I thought it might be useful to you.

Re: Network Printers going Disabled at any given oppotunity.

Thanks for the docs, unfortunately I am well versed in the art of recovering the print system from an unstable state, usually done around 03:00 in the morning via a mobile phone! - It's really the TIFF-zip card I'm interested in, I wondered if anyone else has had any strange experiances with them. They allow an image to be sent as raw, the card then does the necessary jumble to tiff and then sends the result to the printer (aledgedly). We use them due to the large number of prints (all tiffs) that the sites produce!

Thanks again!
