Networking Problem
ip address is 65.102.227.83 and
subnetmask 255.255.255.248. I have to 2
lan cards lan0 and lan1. lan0 is up
lan1 is not configured. ifconfig cmd on
lan0 will return mask ffffff8. I could
not ping my router or any ip address
within the subnet. I could ping the IP
address and the brodcast address only.
I am not sure where to go from her. I
am using a NetGear switch that connects
difrent W2000 systems I could ping NT systems with no problem, but I could not ping from unix or to unix. netsat -ni and -nr shows the correct info. If
any one can shed some light on this.
Thanks

Re: Networking Problem
lanadmin
lan
display
and see what it says. You should get something like:
PPA Number = 0
Description = lan0 Hewlett-Packard LAN Interface Hw Rev 0
Type (value) = ethernet-csmacd(6)
MTU Size = 1500
Speed = 10000000
Station Address = 0x80009fdab08
Administration Status (value) = up(1)
Operation Status (value) = up(1)
Odds are you are missing an up or two.
exit with a return and then quit.
Usually what causes problems here is either the cable (must be straight to connect to a switch) or the autonegotiate not setting up. Check that your speed is the same as the switch thinks it should be. Make sure the port is enabled on the switch (plug one of your NT machines into the port and verify that it works)
Also it is easy to get the cable in the wrong NIC. Try the other one. HP's idea of lan0 may not be the same as yours.

Re: Networking Problem
Try with netmask as 255.255.255.0
Hope this helps.

Re: Networking Problem
It may be 255.255.248.0
what is the ip address of your router?
Use the command "#set_parms addl_netwrk" to specify the subnet mask and default router once again.

Re: Networking Problem
Get the MAC address of another network interface on the same sub-net
Use linkloop to do a link level ping to that MAC address...
linkloop -i 0 0xXXXXXXXXXXX
If this works, the problem is in you TCP/IP configuration

Re: Networking Problem
Check the file /etc/rc.config.d/netconf for the entry
ROUTE_MASK[0]=""
Note: generally value for this parameter is empty
If there is any wrong entry for this field you may not be able to ping anything other than own.
ROUTE_GATEWAY[0]=""
router ip address is specified here.
