Re: New to HP-UX

Hi:

You might start with this:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5963-8942/5963-8942.html

Remember that section-4 of the manpages is devoted to file formats. For example, 'man 4 passwd' would divulge the layout of '/etc/passwd'.

Re: New to HP-UX

Hi (again):

...and I meant to add that the manpages (by release) can be found on the web, here:

Re: New to HP-UX

Andy,

Are you new to Unix or just new to HP-UX?

If you're new to Unix, you might want to look into the O'Reilly books:
http://www.oreilly.com

If it's HP-UX specific info you need, try HP publishing:
http://www.hp.com/hpbooks
or
http://www.phptr.com

Re: New to HP-UX

It sounds like you need 3 things ..
http://www.docs.hp.com
http://www.hp.com/education/sections/hpux.html#hp-ux_admin
and a good SysAdmin Book ..
"Unix System Administration Handbook" - Nemeth,Snyder,Seebass & Hein (PH).

Re: New to HP-UX

I've used the _HP Certified_ book by Rafeeq Ur Rehman (Prentice Hall PTR, 2000) to help me transition from Sun to HP unix. If you're familiar with other forms of unix, don't despair--a lot of what you already know applies directly. But a lot of the things that will trip you up are covered in this book.

You can get it on Amazon or from any number of e-tailers. I've even seen it at Barnes & Noble (though for the full $75 price tag).

Good luck

Re: New to HP-UX

Also, HP has a bunch of papers out there at: http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/iv/enterService.do?NODEID=English_SHW%3A%3ADE_SW_UX_swrec_EN_01_E%2FQ1
They call it the HPUX Software Recovery handbook. These papers are written by different HP engineers on various topics. While it may not suit your needs immediately, in a month or 2, they will answer some of the questions you are bound to have by then.

Hope it helps

Re: New to HP-UX

Hi,
Here's a couple of decent Unix cross-reference URLs. Shows how to perform same/similar tasks on different flavors of UNIX.

Re: New to HP-UX

I read the book Chris Vail mentioned and agree - a very good and clear place to start.

Re: New to HP-UX

Hi Andy:

This forum is also an excellant place to get info on specific problems you may have. The responses to my questions have always been quick, with lots of useful information. Try searching this forum first, then maybe try searching google.com. If you can't find an answer, post in one of the HP ITRC forums.

Re: New to HP-UX

Hi Andy

There is very detailed description of this what you ask for on every HPUX system. Please read the file:

/usr/share/doc/file_system.txt

Re: New to HP-UX

Hi

There are alot of excellent books out on HPUX

One for sure to get is the:HP Certified book by Rafeeq Ur Rehman (Dont know the ISBN #).

Another one that I found is called: Networking
unix by Salim Douba. (very inexpensive book but VERY GOOD for networking).

Re: New to HP-UX

Well, first I'd say that Im not overtly fond of saying I know HP-UX as well as Unix.

At least in my market area, I have to be able to support Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Irix, and Linux.

Being in the field, and taking time to learn Unix ground up has been critical to my success. Learn the OS specifics as a secondary skill, not a primary.

If you know Unix very well, you will find that the details of each are very easy to figure out and learn.

Good reading would be "Essential Unix System Administration", "NFS and NIS administration", "DNS and Bind", and if your not very familiar with Unix at all, then "Unix in a Nutshell". Essential Unix System Administration covers basics for all of the major OS's, including SCO. This is for backups, devices, and basic admin functions.

Good luck, and enjoy!
