What is the recommended OS version for this model?
Where would I get this software?
What would this cost?*
*if too expensive, how would I go about obtaining root on the computer and making sure the OS is in good working order?
Solved! Go to Solution.

You have to purchase a license to get the OS, so hopefully you already have it installed.

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)
Harry & John have already explained how to reset root password so I won't repeat that.
But once you are logged in, make good use of the man pages, and search this forum for info.
Have fun with HP-UX,
John

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)
One other thing, once you get in. Once the root account is made, you can boot normally to that. However, once in, you should create a user account for you, since it can be a bad idea to use root as yours. You can should switch to root when needed.
The easiest way to do this is with SAM (system admin manager). As root user, just type SAM at the prompt to get in. Remember the search tab here at the forums; it'll help you find info quick. Good Luck!

I think your system is actually a B180L, not an 8180L. To determine what model it actually is, you can issue the `model` command.
Good Luck!

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)
appears to be a place you could buy 11.00 media. It's a little steep for me, but purchasing signs everything here, too.
As far as patches and free stuff, try

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)
One other great site for free stuff is
http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/
You can pick up a lot of programs for the box, like gcc (C complier), gzip, and a ton of others. Search and enjoy!
Also, I think the price for the OS is just the CD. HP will also try to get you to get maintenence on the box, which may be useful or not. With maintenence, though, you get updates, etc. (although I think you can always get patches off the web).
