Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Ok, first off, I have no idea what I am doing.. I am a winblows user if that explains things. However I am not ignorant and can learn. Here is my situation, maybe one of you can help :o) I got a Hewlett Packard VISUALIZE 8180L from a former employer that went bankrupt. I am interested in using this box to learn on, however I don???t have root to the box. And I would like to reload the box instead of hacking it. So my question is this:
What is the recommended OS version for this model?
Where would I get this software?
What would this cost?*

*if too expensive, how would I go about obtaining root on the computer and making sure the OS is in good working order?

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Mathew,

Welcome aboard the unix express!

We promise not to slam you, well too much :-)

1.Power On the System
2. Interrupt Bootting process (Press a Key in 10 sec)
3. Yes for interacting ISL
4. hpux -iS for Single user mode
5 passwd command for changing root password

REMEMBER case MATTERS in unix!

X is not equal to x

You have to purchase a license to get the OS, so hopefully you already have it installed.

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Hi

first - you should go for the latest version of the o/s hpux 11i

second - hopefully someione else should be able to point you in the right direction

third - cost minimal a 2users license is free.

lastly to access root

boot the system hold down escape key

when text appears on screen

type boot
msg will appear ( interact with IPL ) say YES

type hpux -is boot

at # prompt

type passwd

enter new password twice

type reboot -n

login as root

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

John,

You could be right about the license, hell I don't pay for anything, my purchasing department does....

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Hi Mathew,

Harry & John have already explained how to reset root password so I won't repeat that.

But once you are logged in, make good use of the man pages, and search this forum for info.

Have fun with HP-UX,

John

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Mathew-

One other thing, once you get in. Once the root account is made, you can boot normally to that. However, once in, you should create a user account for you, since it can be a bad idea to use root as yours. You can should switch to root when needed.
The easiest way to do this is with SAM (system admin manager). As root user, just type SAM at the prompt to get in. Remember the search tab here at the forums; it'll help you find info quick. Good Luck!

ps. http://www.docs.hp.com/index.html is where the on-line manuals are. download and print as needed.

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Honestly as a windows user I???m used to just ripping everything off. But any way that I can do this for free legally would be cool. I will be the only person accessing the system.

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Since you are new to unix/hpux, be sure to use Ignite/UX and fbackup to make a complete backup of your system once it's running.

fbackup is standard installed, Ignite/UX is not. Search the forum for a load of discussions of how to make best use of Ignite

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Here are some *very* useful threads already in this forum for newbies:

I think your system is actually a B180L, not an 8180L. To determine what model it actually is, you can issue the `model` command.

Good Luck!

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=B3782FA

appears to be a place you could buy 11.00 media. It's a little steep for me, but purchasing signs everything here, too.

As far as patches and free stuff, try

Re: Newbie questions (everyone cringes)

Mathew-

One other great site for free stuff is

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/

You can pick up a lot of programs for the box, like gcc (C complier), gzip, and a ton of others. Search and enjoy!

Also, I think the price for the OS is just the CD. HP will also try to get you to get maintenence on the box, which may be useful or not. With maintenence, though, you get updates, etc. (although I think you can always get patches off the web).
