NFS server vanishing (but only with automounter)
Ok, I'm facing a very very strange problem. My systems are up just fine then all of a sudden the automounter just stops mounting directories. If I fire off a manual mount it works fine.
Here is the first error that I see in my syslog:
Feb 13 14:19:48 dewey automountd[798]: stat /users/students: Connection reset by peer
Feb 13 14:19:48 dewey automountd[798]: errno 232
Feb 13 14:19:48 dewey automountd[798]: server auto.direct is up but can not get the device id! errno= 232
Here is another interesting snippit from slightly farter down the log file:
Feb 13 17:15:05 happy automountd[799]: stat /users/students: Connection refused
Feb 13 17:15:05 happy automountd[799]: errno 239
Feb 13 17:15:05 happy automountd[799]: server auto.direct is up but can not get the device id! errno= 239
Feb 13 17:15:07 happy automountd[799]: server jafar:/users/students is up but can not get the device id! errno= 239
Feb 13 17:15:29 happy automountd[799]: server auto.direct is up but can not get the device id! errno= 239
Feb 13 17:15:31 happy automountd[799]: server jafar:/users/students is up but can not get the device id! errno= 239
Feb 13 17:15:31 happy vmunix: NFS getattr failed for server jafar: RPC: (unknown error code)
Feb 13 17:15:31 happy above message repeats 3 times
Feb 13 17:15:31 happy automountd[799]: dev ff000035, rdev 0 not in mnttab
Any ideas? It only seems to be happening on one of the two file servers (jafar)
(man I hope those log entries dont get mangled with the paste... this window I'm entering data in is small)

Re: NFS server vanishing (but only with automounter)
Hi,
Install the latest Kernel (PHKL) and Networking (PHNE) patches. Also check the permissions for the /etc/hosts file. It should be 'world' readable.
HTH,
