NFS with AIX-4.2

Ever since December patches are installed on our HP-UX 11.00 boxes (comming from the September patches) communication over NFS with AIX-4.2 has decreased performance considerably in both directions. AIX 4.3 has no problems. AIX-4.2 is also at the latest available patch level.

Hoping newer patches might have solved this problem already, I installed PHKL_25237, PHKL_25813, PHKL_26059, PHNE_24909, PHNE_25116, and PHNE_25423. But these did not bring me back to the performance of before the December patches.

Useful ideas?

Procura,

Have you tried using the custom patch manager to determine what other patches might be suggested? Especially network and IO patches.

Re: NFS with AIX-4.2

Yes I did.

22566 suggests 25116 which is a spinoff of 24099, 23121, and 22381

21767 suggests 25423 which is a spinoff of 25135, 24715, and 24289

24909 mentioning biod is mentioned in a lot of other patches, so it might be an important one :)

25525 mentions 25906 both not yet installed, so could be tried. But I don't /like/ reboots. I try to avoid annoying other users as much as possible, and the description didn't sound to much as a solution.

Others are 25237 (installed), 24082, and 18543 (both not installed).

Re: NFS with AIX-4.2

Are any of the servers using Token-Ring? There is an issue with MTU size configuration when using NFS.

Re: NFS with AIX-4.2

No token ring. All 10/100 ethernet

But why should MTU have changed installing the December patches? And why only AIX-4.2? HP-UX 10.20, HP-UX 11.00 and AIX-4.3 all act as expected.

Any area where NFS related MTU settings can be checked?

Re: NFS with AIX-4.2

under advanced settings on the card you can find mtu sizes. The problem is usually with Token-Ring because it has had different default values. I have not seen the problem with Ethernet because the default size has been very consistant at 1500.

Re: NFS with AIX-4.2

Indeed 1500 on all cards.
