NIS Server with Clients on Extended LAN

I am running an NIS master server on one LAN, and will be moving one or more of its NIS clients to another LAN which is three routers away. What can I do to make the remote NIS clients function properly? Can I set up an NIS slave server on the remote client and periodically update its maps, or do I have to create an entirely new NIS master server on the remote LAN using a different NIS domain name?

Re: NIS Server with Clients on Extended LAN

Fred, you need to create a slave on each different subnet.

See http://docs.hp.com/hpux/communications

Installing and Administering NFS Services, either for 10.20 or 11.0.

Re: NIS Server with Clients on Extended LAN

You can go ahead and set it up as a slave.
In fact that is one of the major purposes behind NIS ... it expands beyond the usual subnet and "internet" domaines ....

( but I'll admit I often get confused about the use of "DOMAINE" )

But, you have to be real careful in defining your default routing .

See Brian Brown's Question about Routing Tables.
