All well after reboot.

Sorry no one got a bunny, but thanks for all the suggestions, especially the ones that helped me to get a little further.

Hi Mark,

Sorry to add to this solved case:
I believe a ypmake at the server after adding the '+' in the passwd should have worked (like a reboot for the client).
Also check, that in group and hosts is also a '+' added.
