no more PTY left

Hi!
I have this wierd problem.
I have my "npty" kernel paramater set to 2000 ( a fiction no. that should support all my users)
now, i got to this situation where users can't "rsh/remsh" to my HP machine because they get the message that there's no more open PTY left (or something like that, can't remember the exact message) but they CAN telnet to it, and login successfully.
Any one knows why?

HP engineers must live on Mars. Otherwise how can you explain the fact that they invented the wheel themselves?

Re: no more PTY left

Hi,

You don't metion your OS level. but I'm going to assume it is HPUX 11, as this is a normal problem. With the introduction of HPUX 11, a new parameter called 'nstrtel' was included. To fix your problem the best method is to have 'npty' 'nstrpty' and nstrtel the same value in the kernel.

e.g
npty 2000
nstrpty 2000
nstrtel 2000

Once you have re-generated your kernel and rebooted your system, run the following commands which will create the pseudo ptys required.

# cd /dev
# insf ???d pty ???s 1024 ???e ???v
# insf ???d ptm ???s 1024 ???e ???v
# insf -d telm ???s 1024 ???e ???v
# insf -d tels ???s 1024 ???e -v

Re: no more PTY left

As Michael said you need to create the device files. Follow his advice.

Re: no more PTY left

Hi,

just to answer your question about why they can telnet and not rsh/remsh/rlogin, telnet uses tty whereas the remote commands use pty.

Not much help on the actual problem itself though!

regards,
Kevin.

Re: no more PTY left

Hi Noam,

It would be a big help if we knew the exact msg.
Can you remsh to it & report the msg?

Rgds,

Re: no more PTY left

hi!
the problem is now solved.
after speaking with HP support (serveral times) on the phone, we tried at the end to run:
"insf -e"
to recreate all device files.
it created a lot of new device files.
I wished i knew to put the finger on the exact thing that was missing, but i just can't.
