Non-English HP-UX

Hello,
I would like to load a system with a non-English locale HP-UX. Having never done this or seen a system having non-English HP-UX, I don't know if this is possible given the CD-ROM media that came with my system.

From a cold install, there is a language field that may be altered. However, after loading the system using German, the language of that system still appears to be English. Swlist shows:

HPUXEng32RT B.11.00.01 English HP-UX 32-bit Runtime Environment
HPUXGer32RT B.11.00.01 German HP-UX CDE Runtime Environment

So the CDE was installed as German, but the HPUX Runtime is still English.

Does any one know if the base install media different for non-English languages, or is this normal and I need to make appropriate environment variable changes?

If anyone installed any non-English OS and has a HP part number for their CD media I'd appreciate knowing it. The language does not matter as this is for testing.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Non-English HP-UX

Hi Erik:

Take a look at Knowledge Base Document #KBRC00000156. You should be able to set LANG=de_DE.roman8 or LANG-de_DE.iso88591.

Re: Non-English HP-UX

Hi Erik,

i guess your environment LANG is set to C. Set it to de_DE.iso88591. This can be done in the users .dtprofile like:

LANG=de_DE.iso88591
export LANG

This should give you the full german CDE.

BTW: why do you want to use a german CDE in the USA?

Hope this helps

Re: Non-English HP-UX

James, Stefan,

Thanks for the pointer to the LANG env.

What I am looking to confirm if the base OS, not the CDE, is English only. When I say "base OS", I mean the command line interface accessed through the console (dumb terminal).

So rephrasing my questions are: In another country, say Germany, is the OS CD install media is the same there as in the US? If so, is setting the Language option on the install configuration screen the only difference for setting up a German locale OS?

What I am trying to do is test a server process that, at the request of a client, runs a command line tool, and returns the output of that tool (kind of like remsh). I want to confirm that the language settings, or installation, does not affect the output of the tool(s). These tools are command line only and do not use the CDE. I'll be doing this for multi-byte languages as well (Japanese).

BTW, James, I could not find the KB document you referenced. I searched the KB for any document number KBRC* and *156. Nothing that returned had the exact number or even a related topic.

Thanks.

Hi Erik:

Here's the document I cited from the Knowledge Base (see attachment) in the event that you can't get to it. For full access, according to your support contracts, always make sure that you are logged into the ITRC. Anyway, here it is.

Regards!
