Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
I have a non-HP JetDirect Card in a printer that I am trying to get a UNIX box with HP-UX 11.0 to print to. (It is a Tally Printer with TallyCom+ card)
The printer has a valid IP address and can be seen from the network. It also has LPR/LPD enabled.
When I go to SAM it only gives me an option to configure HP-Jetdirect NICs/servers if I choose to configure a network printer.
I believe its possible to use lpadmin to configure the printer, but I dont know the specific arguments for the Tally, or if I have to install any software to initialise LPD Printing on the Unix box.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Tom Fletcher

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
As you say that the printer has LPR/LPD enabled I would think that the best thing
is to use SAM and define a remote printer
(not a network printer)
In SAM you specify the host-name of the
machine, in your case that will have to be
a host-name you asosiate with the IP address
of the printer network card.
You must also specify the remote printer-name.
You will have to check the documentation
for the network-card how to identify the
printer-name.
In SAM you have a flag saying if the remote
printer is a BSD-printe or not. If you do
not find anyting about this in the documantation you will probably have to try
with this flag set or not set. (by default it
is not set)

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
If you can get the printer to ping, then you can try and follow the attached document from the ITRC.
In some cases you can workaround a JetDirect Interface and use another networking type card.
FYI, JetAdmin is now longer supported by as of Jan 2002.
The suggested replacement is a free download of the HP Printer Installer (HPPI). It can be downloaded from www.hp.com -- support -- search 'printer installer'
Try the document first. You can always call HP's Customer Care Line to see if they know of any documents they can send you on the topic - 208-323-2551.
This document is are available on the ITRC for future reference.
Hope that helps.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
Tthought I would include help with Remote Printing as well -- Remote spooling is the other option -- the supported method is to have an HP9000 Local -> Network -> HP9000 Remote -> Local printer on a Remote 9000.
I have included some helps on this as well.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
What you need to do is configure a Remote printer rather than a network printer. You can do this from SAM. You need, of course, to have the printer's hostname in /etc/host, DNS, or NIS(+). The 'Remote System Name' is the hostname of the printer and the 'Remote Printer Name' is the name of the queue on the printer. Most remote printer lpd daemons recognize names like 'TEXT' or 'BINARY'; study your network printer documentation for this value. Some simply don't care at all.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
I have networked lexmark printers on my network.
in /etc/host file, add:
lexmarkprinter xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
done setup of networked printer and uses the same name for remotehost and printer (lexmarkprinter)
it works fine.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
HP Jetadmin will not print to a third party network printer. To Configure a third part network printer, configure that printer locally on some other system and then configure it as a remote printer on the hp server with the remote server as the system to which it is connected.
Hope this helps.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
Alternatively you can configure with
Intel prosetup utility. You can select
other remote printer from the menu and
give the IP address. For port, select
internal MIO Card. You can select Text,
Postscript or Text and Postscript for
type.

Re: Non HP-JetDirect Network Printing
One thing to keep in mind - if you are printing large jobs to the Lexmark with JetAdmin, and you run out of paper, get a jam, or a windows user sends a job to it, etc. you may see your JetAdmin job reprint from page 1 in the middle of the job.
It looks like the way to fix this is to change the community name string in the lexmark printer. 2 Ways -
1)Use telnet: Telnet
2)Use Lexmark's MarkVision Professional software
a) under settings-network-tcp/ip, at the bottom
b) create a device policy for a print server (if you want to change alot of printers at one time)
JetAdmin and HPPI does SNMP GETs before the print data, one with community string of internal (which Jetdirect cards will answer, but no other vendor), and one with community string of public, which asks for the private mib location. If a printer responds to this one (as the lexmark does with the OID for it's private mib .641.), then the JetAdmin/HPPI will tend to do "status checks" by requesting SNMP OIDs when it detects a dataflow issue (don't know what kicks that off...). Anyway lexmark responds to the status OID request with "no such name" (cuz the OIDs are in HP's private MIB .11.) and then Jetadmin/HPPI restarts the print job from page one. If the community string name in the lexmark is changed from the default of public, JetAdmin/HPPI still performs the initial SNMP GETs, but gets no response in either case, and thus evidently thinks the printer is "dumb" and never does the status checks in the middle of the job, but instead just keeps sending data...
Hope this helps
