Analyze one or more LVM Volume Groups
Menu: VolumeManager/LVM_Conversion/Convert_LVM_VGs

Use this operation to analyze one or more LVM Volume Groups for
possible conversion to VxVM disk groups. This operation checks
for problems that would prevent the conversion from completing
successfully. For example, it calculates the space required to
add an LVM Volume Group's disk's to a VxVM disk group and
to replace any existing LVM partitions and volumes with VxVM
Volume Manager volumes, plexes, and sub-disks.

For this release, conversion is only allowed for Non-root LVM
Volume Groups. Hence, analysis is only allowed on Non-root LVM
Volume Groups.

all: convert all LVM Volume Groups (all except Root VG)

list: list all disk devices

Re: not able to do vxvm convert

Hi,

1.things that should have been checked.

1.a the full (payable) vxvm license is installed.

i.e. vxdctl license should show at least the following output.

# vxdctl license
All features are available:
Mirroring
Root Mirroring
Concatenation
Disk-spanning
Striping
RAID-5
VxSmartSync
Clustering-lite
DMP (multipath enabled)

NOTE1 :THe real interesting thing is that DMP should say multipath enabled.
NOTE2 : Oh yes any emc powerpath software on the system should best be removed.

1.b install the latests vxvm 4.1 patches.

1.c check the hcl, hardware compatibility list, on the symantec website, support.symantec.com, if its not needed to install a asl library for the clariion array, to get DMP working, or any other conditions..

If the above conditions are all met.

execute # ioscan -fn;insf -e -v;vxconfigd -km enable

Then check with vxdisk -o alldgs list, which luns, vxvm sees as LVM luns.

# vxdisk -o alldgs list

For the moment, I dont see any luns, that vxvm has recognized as a LVM lun, while the "vxdisk list" "status" output should at least have given a LVM status for the vg00 disk c6t2d0.

i.e.
c2t6d0 auto:none - - online invalid

should show
c2t6d0 ? - - LVM

THe cause for this is probably, one of the "conditions", that where mentioned earlier, which are not met.

Or you did something that caused vxvmconvert to allready remove the lvm header from the vg00 disk, a reboot might be in order to check this. ;)

At least concentrate first on getting vxvm to correctly recognize c2t6d0 as a LVM disk, afterwards, do the other vxvmconvert tests.

Greetz,
Chris
PS. trying to convert LVM volumegroups to vxvm diskgroups, without the LVM volumegroups having any LVM logical volumes defined, is not really usefull.

i have the QPK and Feature Bundle for HPUX 11.23 for June 2009 installed.

this is the new VGDISPLAY.
we are doing this is a part of test so that we can convert LVM VGs to VxVM DGs and if possible migrate them to AIX Built server, as we have huge data.

am i ruuning into this problem as i am running on rp8420 that is PARISC running HPUX 11.23?i was successfully able to convert the LVM VGS into VXVM DGs on ia64 hp server rx2620 running HPUX 11.23, without much issues.
also what is the Link for the Hardware Compatibilty List?

As per the last O/P shared for vxdisk list and vgdisplay -v , the vxvmconvert throws errors as belows:

Convert one or more LVM Volume Groups
Menu: VolumeManager/LVM_Conversion/Convert_LVM_VGs

Use this operation to convert LVM Volume Groups to VxVM disk groups.
This adds the disks to a disk group and replaces existing LVM volumes
with VxVM volumes. LVM-VxVM Volume Group conversion may require a
reboot for the changes to take effect. For this release, only
Non-root LVM Volume Groups can be converted.

More than one Volume Group or pattern may be entered at the prompt.
Here are some LVM Volume Group selection examples:

Re: not able to do vxvm convert

Hi,

Might not be enough.

Go to patch database on the itrc.hp.com website.

Select
>> find HP-UX patches in a patch set

The select vxvm and the OS on which the patches will be installed.

It will then generate a list of patches for the different vxvm versions on that OS level, download the patchset for your vxvm version.

You cant download it from software.hp.com, I think. Normally vxfs 5.0/vxvm 5.0 for hp-ux 11.23, only comes, on a seperate cd, as a dependency for the sms suites that needs it.

You can however open a call with hp support and ask the base-vxvm 5.0/base-vxfs 5.0, to be send , that way.

Greetz,
Chris
PS. If all fails, reinstall the hp-ux 11.23 pa-risc testsystem from scratch, install the relevant vxvm patchset etc.. its a bit hard to believe that even on vxvm 3.5, vxvm wouldnt recognize from the getgo, the internal disk were the lvmbootdisk is located on, as a LVM lun in "vxdisk -o alldgs list" .

Re: not able to do vxvm convert

Hi,

Log a call with HP support. The forums/internet is more for instant advise instead of real "call working".
