Not able to login into a HP-UX box

Hi,

I am not able to login inot a HP-UX box.

everything seems to be alright at the console. I could connect to the server,but when i give the root password, the server doesnot prompt for the password.

Please suggest.

This sounds to me like you are doing something wrong.

Look at /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

It might provide clues.

Many companies have policies against direct root login. Try logging in as a regular user and then try:

su - root

I am trying to login into the server. For that matter, if i enter any username, there is no response from the server.

Its like the below

No matter how much time iwait for the prompt...there is no response...

i have already checked the syslog.log file...but there are no related messages...not only direct root..i am not able to login using any user..

Are your user information stored locally (passwd) or via NIS, LDAP or whatever? Did you check all the IP settings (route/gateway, ...)?

Does this all happens for "normal" network connections (e.g. telnet/ssh) or even on the console?

i am able to logininto the server at console...this is happening when i am logging into the server using ssh

1. Did you get the same problem while using telnet/rlogin?.

2. Is the problem occurs for all the users or for root users only?

If the problem arise only on using ssh, then there should be some restrictions done on ssh.
else check any customized entry in /etc/security/access.config. By default all the lines are commented in this file or check the PermitRootLogin entry in /opt/ssh/etc/sshd_config

telnet is disabled...so i am trying to ssh to the server....also...i have below entry in my netconf file....

DEFAULT_INTERFACE_MODULES="pfil "

even if i clear the entry and reboot the server...it appears again....does this have anything to do woth my problem...

the issue is the same with all users...

I would suggest to try the following:

* check using the ipaddress from ssh client
* check /etc/profile and .profile for the root user, might be something there.

To eradicate the issue,

enable telnet login and try to login via root

# cat /etc/inetd.conf |grep telnetd
telnet stream tcp6 nowait root /usr/lbin/telnetd telnetd


Uncomment it

# inetd -c

Reread it and then check if telnet is possible,
If yes, then we need to troubleshoot from the ssh part.

Due to the time limitations,we had to proced with the rebuild of the box.
