Re: Not able to login into hp-ux box

Have you mounted the filesystem before changing the password, have a look at the following thread:

Re: Not able to login into hp-ux box

"man login" explains some of the many
possible causes of such problems.

> Please help me out.

You first. It might help to know a few basic
facts, such as:

Log in from where? Serial console?
Workstation keyboard? Telnet? SSH?

Log in as who? "root"? Some normal user?

What, exactly, happens when you try to log
in? Actual commands and actual responses are
often more helpful than vague descriptions.

Is this a new installation, or a new problem
on an old installation? What's changed?

What's in the obviously related files, like:
/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow
/etc/securetty
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

How? What happened? Did it work? Did it
complain?

Re: Not able to login into hp-ux box

don't put any # or @ in your password. because this has special meanings to terminal.

Hardly. To any _terminal_, those characters
are nothing special. To _programs_ like
"login" or "getty", they may have some
special meaning. But, as "man login" would
tell you:

Both login and getty understand simple single-character quoting
conventions. Typing a backslash in front of a character quotes it and
allows the inclusion of such things as spaces and tabs.

Or, one might add, any other special
characters.

Re: Not able to login into hp-ux box

Yes, but the WARNINGS section of the passwd man page also states:

"Avoid password characters which have special meaning to the tty driver, such as # (erase) and @ (kill). You may not be able to login with these characters."

I try to avoid those characters, just in case.
