not able to ping a hp ux machine

hi ,

I have configured a HP UX with the following details

ip 16.180.19.***
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 16.180.19.1

after setting these params , i was able to ping other machines (including my desktop ) but i couldnt ping this hp ux machine from my desktop .

I mean to say that i'm able to ping from the HP UX machine but not the other way around .

Like to know your thoughts on why this is happening !!!

Saj,

How are you trying to ping to your HP server ?
Using ip address or hostname ?
If you are trying to ping using hostname - check if DNS entry is there for this host - nslookup hostname
If trying using ip address, are the desktops in the same sub-net 16.180.19.0 ? if not are the routes updated for this network/subnet ?
Try tracert from your desktop
Is there any firewall in between the desktops and your server ? If yes are ports opened ?

For your info,

1)i'm trying to ping using ip address .
2)Yes, they are on the same network .
3)Tracert also throws the same error "request timed out "

4) No i dont think its an issue with the firewall cause even 16.180.19.(xxx+1) is also not able to ping it (which happens to be a linux machine ) .

Is 16.180.19.(xxx+1) able to ping other hosts on the same network? It may still be a firewall issue.

Hi sajan,

What steps did you take to change the IP address? 'set_parms ' or did you modify '/etc/rc.config.d/netconf' and execute '/sbin/init.d/net start'? Did you check that the IP wasn't already in use? Are you sure that the assigned IP is not in a private range (perhaps part of a DHCP address pool)? Can you do anything more sophisticated than 'ping' from the HP-UX box?

Please post netconf file so that we can help you out. Also post netstat -rn from HP-UX server.

It looks like network issue from Windows.

thanks for the many help . Thanks for the support . I had upgraded my HP UX server from march version to june version . I think there was an issue with the upgradation procedure i used .

Now i have reinstalled the june version and is working fine .
