Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

I am using HP rp 3410. Earlier there were two hard disks and now the main one gone faulty and the server is running through the mirrored. When I reboot the server it works fine but when I take backup (scbackup - Full backup) it says "root boot is not available". What can be done?

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

I don't know your backup application, but did you remove all related information for the removed disk?

Please post the results of:

# strings /etc/lvmtab
# vgdisplay -v vg00
# lvlnboot -v
# strings /stand/bootconf
# setboot

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

Use Ignite backup command to take OS backup.

Ignite-UX is a product bundled with HP-UX 11i that provides a process to create a bootable system recovery tape. The tape contains a boot area and an operating system archive. Should your root disk fail or corruption of the root disk take place, you can recover using the bootable system recovery tape.

make_tape_recovery is the Ignite-UX tool that is used to create the bootable system recovery tape. You could boot and restore from the system recovery tape and then use your system backup to fully restore the system.

#make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

I am using customize HP - OS (company specific HP-UX11i). I am using the command
#scbackup - for taking ignite backup, that requires two 40GB tapes. One for Ignite backup and the second for Full backup (contains application backup)of the server.
Soon I will display the output of the commands.

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

As far as make_tape_recovery is concerned I cannot use the recovery tape as earlier the server was running on different version (older verion of application running)and now it is running on the later release. And for the later release I dont have any backup. For the previous release I am having tape but that I cannot use now.Version in-compatibility.

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

Why dont you try to correct the lvm problem first and then see if the backup problem will be solved with this correction.
Do you need the mirror copy, or you can temporary reduce it.....

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

There are certain steps of commands like lvreduce and vgreduce to reduce the size. I am not sure about the whole procedure. If anybody knows the procedure please mention.

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

So there are 2 ways of solving the problem
1) Reduce the unwanted mirror copy
2) restore the configuration from the backup file if the disk is not failed
or replace the disk and restore the configuration if it has failed

1) /dev/vg00
/dev/dsk/c2t0d0 <- failed of with deleated header
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0

>> #vgdisplay shows:
Cur PV 2
Act PV 1

>> also all the logical volumes are in state stale because on of the mirror copies has failed

>> as i see all the lvols are mirrored but you can check it with #lvdisplay -v /dev/vg00/ | more

if you do not see the disk device file in the lvdisplay output but instead of it you see "???" then you should use the -k option when reducing the mirror copy:

>>#lvreduce -m 0 /dev/vg00/ /dev/dsk/c2t0d0
OR
>>#lvdisplay -kv /dev/vg00/ <- to check the pvkey of the disk
#lvreduce -m 0 -k /dev/vg00/

Then reduce the vg with the failed disk:
>> #vgreduce /dev/vg00 /dev/dsk/c2t0d0
OR
>> #vgreduce -f vg00
#mv /etc/lvmtab /etc/lvmtab.
#vgscan -v

check the lvmtab, vgdisplay, lvlnboot...
if the generating of the lvmtab fails for some reason you can restore back the old one

2) check if the disk is failed (syslog.log or dmesg... scsi errors or such things)
If just the header infos are somehow corrupt then restore it:

#vgcfgrestore -n /dev/vg00 -l <- to list the /etc/lvmcnf/vg00.conf file and check if the disks are as expected, if yes then you can do the following:
#pvchange -a n /dev/dsk/c2t0d0
#vgcfgrestore -n vg00 /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0
#vgchange -a y vg00

check with lvdisplay -v ... if the stale extents are being resynchronized...

Re: Not able to take backup from the Mirrored Disk

forgot to mention that he option 2) can be done only if the OLAR introduction patches or later versions are installed on the system
They are lvm commands and cumulative patches.
Should check additionaly which exactly are they, but if you have the latest patches there will be no problem
