NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Hi all, my customer cannot attach to a share on hpux CIFS server. This is a new server, previous server was fine. New installation of CIFS/Samba, security files are identical. However, I have emulated customers access successfully albeit from a different domain.
I'm thinking its an NT PDC problem as my knowledge of CIFS started with thhis problem.

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Was the HPUX server added to the Windows Domain?

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Hi Geoff, seems obvious really. The customer advised that local NT server people had been involved but couldnt help. I shall ask that question of the NT team. Cheers for swift response.

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Hey Ian - cool - can you post your smb.conf file as well as any errors in /var/opt/samba/smbd.log and nmbd.log?

Maybe turn logging up on sambe to say 2?

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

hi morgan,

You can configur your samba server with SWAT tool. Just typ Ipadreds:901 in je webbrowse.
If you want to do that manualy you have to set smb.conf file.

For more info check http://samba.org/

Don't forget that you have to make each windowsNT user on your UNX box as UNIX user.
After that you have to make samba user's to . Usernam and the password's has to be same as your windowsNT users.

if you use ordinary workgroup than you have to make some chenges in this section of smb.conf file

[global]
workgroup = TUX-NET -> name of the workgroup

After you make some changes in your smb.conf file you have to restart your samba server /etc/init.d/smb restart

i hoop this help

hi morgen,

The solution i just send to you is for Linux box.

You have to look for stopsmb and startsmb to restart your samba server on HPUX machine

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Geoff, also
- i havent included printer shares as info considered sensitive....
- the NT guy has responsed, he also connected from his PC to the share successfully and he IS in the same domain as customer.
Customer to raise a Deskside support ticket as this could now be PC related even though he can still connect to original live server ok.

thanks

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Geoff et al - please accept my apologies for the customers silliness. All this time he was using the wrong password despite me asking several times upon initial outset of problem. Its a cruel world out there!. I even read the 152 page CIFS manual to get this sorted!

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Hi Ian,

Is it just one PC that has the problem, or one user, or is it more complex than that? Have you tried getting the user to login from your PC that worked?

regards,

Darren.

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Ah yes, that old chestnut - users and passwords At least you now have a full appreciation of the CIFS manual now ;)

You must have sent your reply around the same time that I was initially reading your post!

regards,

Darren.

PS: Please don't forget to assign points to those that gave assistance. (and I'm not necessarily including myself in that, due to my timing!!)

Re: NT Workstation cannot access CIFS hpux server

Ian,

Glad it's resolved.

Something you might want to test in the future, change to SECURITY = SERVER

Then set PASSWORD SERVER = NTBDC1, NTBDC2
and put WORKGROUP = NTDOMAIN

NTDOMAIN is of course the Windows Domain that your client is in, and NTBDCX is a list of Windows NT Domain Controllers.

That way, the customer doesn't have to enter a password at all....they will be authenticated based on the Windows Login (they will still need an Unix id = to their Windows id - or setup in the map file /etc/opt/samba/username.map).
