NTP setup

On my server I setup my ntp.conf file for broadcasting on 3 subnets with the entries
broadcast
broadcast
etc.

On my client and this is were its a little confusing due to inconsistencies in man pages, user docs, etc.. I want my clients to get the time from the servers network broadcast.
With the client ntp.conf set to
server
broadcastclient yes

I get return values running ntpq -p. In this setup does the client get time from the server or the broadcast address?

If the cleint ntp.conf is set (per xntpd man page)
broadcastclient
and no other values, ntpq -p does not show a connection. The same story goes if the ntp.-conf only configured with :
broadcastclient yes
or
broadcast
broadcastclient yes.

So what should it be?
