oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

Where can I find the most inexpensive copy
of Reflection/1?

And what's the oldest version that has a
working ssh implementation?

Thanks in advance.

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

Reflections and Hummingbird are both expensive and only recently by my recollection implemented ssh and it was a high cost add in.

$100 does the whole thing.

I have not tested it.

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

SSH was added to version 10. However, at that time, it required some licensing steps due to US security regulations. I believe it was lifted last year. The current version is 11 with 12 coming out soon. No version prior to 10 has SSH. (BTW: it works quite flawlessly) WRQ's product is the best HP emulator ever and with the very powerful macro language, you can automate virtually any keyboard task.

Also, Reflection/1 was renamed Reflection for HP several revisons ago, and Reflection/2 is now called Reflection for Unix. There is also a web-based version which is ideal for multiple sites where the end user tends to play with settings. The web version configs are completely controlled by the central site and the web version also offers several protocol choices including SSH.

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

Just an add on (no points please). Reflection 12 is out and (IMHO) is much better than 11. It fixed a few annoying little bugs that I hadn't even realized were bothering me until I upgraded. It has built-in ssh support that works great. Reflection 11 also had built-in. Reflection 10 required the installation of a (free) add-on product.

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

hi,

I did use a trial of PenguiNet. (www.siliconcircus.com)
It's neat, it's cheap (28 USD / ├В┬г15), supports SSH, less overhead, ....

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

Thanks for all the info.
A few follow-up questions...

Q#1: what is "Reflectoin 2"? Another name
for "Reflectio X", or something else??

Q#2: I still want to buy Reflection, as
it is the only hpterm emulator available.
What web site has it for the best price?

Thanks again.

Re: oldest Reflection/1 that has ssh?

Reflection is a family of products that was created back in the early 1980's. Reflection terminal emulators came in series 1,2,3,4 and 7 through the 1980's. Here is a short history:

1 = HP terminal emulator for 2392 and series 700's (NOTE: hpterm is a a very limited emulator and actually does not emulate any known model of HP terminal)

2 = DEC VT-series emulator (vt52, vt100 and later models)

3 = HP graphics terminal HP2623A (monochrome) emulation

4 = LAT and/or IBM emulation (I've forgotten)

7 = HP color graphics terminal HP2627

Note that HP graphics terminals have nothing to do with Xwindows--they were terminals with additional RAM and bit-mapped vector generation triggered by escape sequences.

Reflection/X is totally different. Reflectin/X, like Hummingbird Exceed, is a way to map and display X11 (Xwindows) graphic sequences. As such, no Xwindow emulator actually intiates any program tasks like a terminal emulator. Instead, you start the emulator, then get the attention of a remote server, ask it to display a desktop manager like CDE and/or 'borrow' a terminal emulator like hpterm by running it on the remote server and displaying the results on your PC.

Since all of your system administration tasks can be handled with a terminal (or emulator), I don't recommend Xwindows, especially when using a slow link like DSL (or worse, a modem). Telnet and SSH are many times faster than Xwindows.

As far as price, you purchase single copies through WRQ but if you need dozens of copies, you can check the WRQ website for reseller information. Note that there is a good HP terminal emulator called QCTerm (http://www.aics-research.com/qcterm/). All other free emulators are vt100 or similar (no HP capability). But QCTerm does not offer SSH capability. As far as I know, WRQ's Reflection for HP is the only true HP terminal emualtor with SSH.
