oldest running HP-UX server contest

HP is celebrating 20 years of HP-UX. If you have 'old reliable' in a back corner somewhere, maybe you can win.

See http://www.hp.com/go/HPUX20

You need to provide the serial # of your machine.

A similar contest was held just for the UK this year. Winner announced here:

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

If this works the way the "oldest running HP
OpenVMS server" "contest" works, then the
"prize" you can expect to win is a phone call
from someone trying to sell you a nice new
Itanium system.

Look familiar?

Youch, self-select marketing?

I was hoping this would be a fun thing.

There are contact opt-outs at the bottom of the web form. HP sales folks should honor them.

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

Old servers are not a measurement for any quality or speed, but nostalgic.

Past times are always good ...
IMHO "unknown" operating systems (not starting with "w" or "l" are not a good target for attacks, so you don't need to apply any security patches and you can let it just run ... , would you agree?

If I would still run win3.1 - I'm not a target, right?
But I would be proud of it.

;-)

How about uptimes? I like to compare servers to a car. Maintenance is just like changing the engine's oil, do it or not - it's up to you. You are required to stop and start the engine (reboot) to do this.
You can let it run until it definitely stops for any reason - it's up to you and it could take several years buntil it dies.

VMS (for example) is still running, nobody is recognizing this and the world is still turning around ...

Consider this thread question as fun - there are a lot of forum members running (very) old hardware here (e.g. T500 or I- and F-class servers) ...

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

How about when it should _STOP_ running?

Are you aware that, at least in Europe, that would be an instant cessation of mobile phone SMS (short meassage service)?

Maybe the world will not stop turning, but my guess is, that it _WOULD_ be noted... :-)

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

I agree with you, Jan.

The idea was this: Why should somebody run the "oldest" system? Ask for example the MPE or VMS folks, they know some good reasons, right?

But ask other people about the age of their systems and about hp-ux, mpe, tru64 or vms - almost nobody will know them. This says nothing about the importance ...

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

Don't have an "oldest" running HP-UX server - as we patch ours twice a year, but I do have this "cough" solaris 7 one:

[gwild@mars /home/gwild] $ uptime
9:08am up 1704 day(s), 21:57, 1 user, load average: 0.21, 0.29, 0.29

They aren't talking about uptime (number of days since last reboot), but rather the age of the server itself.

When you go to the page referenced and register for the contest you are prompted for the serial number of the server and that is all. From the serial number they look to see when it was manufactured.

I just decommissioned 2 E55's a couple of months ago. They were still running great.

I entered the serial number for the oldest D-series I have.

So - if I go back through my old support contracts and dig up the serial number of the 827 that we originally downsized to and submit that . . . . .

Fear not. You'll get the sales phone call
irregardful of the validity of the serial
number you supply. (Unless you supply a bad
phone number, too.)

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

We have an F20 purchased 1993 still runs hpux 10.10. We also have a G70 (two CPU) with a fully loaded memory carrier (768MB Wow), though that is turned off currently. I fully expect it to boot though, if required.

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

1) Yes, this is not an uptime contest, tho that is interesting too. Just the oldest machine you still actually use.

The UK winner is detailed here:
http://h40059.www4.hp.com/campaigns/golddust/index.htm , it was 1993 with a model E35 to win that one. It was running just their DNS service.

So, Mike's F20 could could have a chance, based on these UK results.

2) Yes, this one is just the US, sorry about that.

3) Yes, looks like a sales call may be involved. Sorry about that. I guess they figure if you last bought hardware in 1993, a sales call is warranted ;) ?

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

FYI, the cutoff for this contest is January 15, 2008. So still time to test a power-up on that G70, perhaps.

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

Thanks for info Scot. I will try and get that G70 ready for boot. I am sure it will, it used to have 3 full height 5.25" disks, 1 x 1.3GB and 2 x 670MB, until I upgraded it to 2 x 4GB and hp-ux 11.00 about 2 years ago.

It is a pity we sold our 827s, that was 1990 model a couple of years ago, that would have won it.

I'll update the post to let you know how it goes.

Re: oldest running HP-UX server contest

The '700' workstation models began in 1991. Some of those you have listed first shipped in 1992.
