Oracle installer starting too slow

Could anyone help me? At my HP-UX 11.0 system
Oracle Installer starting too slow, i mean first picture loading about 7 minutes, then all working OK, also X server connect at this system is very slow, i mean first login screen, and loading CDE, after loading all is working fine. Maybe someone had the same problem (maybe some patches needed). I forot to say that my system is almost idle, and system performance must be OK i think

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

Tell me what kind of system and how much memory. That will be helpful.

Check network settings on the switch port. lanadmin -x 0 (change the zero to a relavent number).

You should be getting at least 100 BaseT manual speed. If not it can be reset with lanadmin -X 0 100FD.

It can be hardcoded in /etc/rc.config.d/hpbtlanconf .

Check your DISPLAY variable and change it from a hostname, which can be slowed by DNS resolution to an IP address.

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

Niki,

If you are running your Java based Oracle installer on a X Desktop resident on your PC (ie. using eXceed, RefelectionX, etc.) - then this is "normal" behaviour. Java, and certain X clients run slow accross networks - specially slow networks.

My advice, set up VNC so your X-server (a virtualized X desktop) is local to your server.

Same is true for running whatever Java based GUI we have out there for HP-UX environments -- ie. Netbackup GUI, VEA, etc..

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

Hi,

I also encountered this problem today but I was unable to find a solution. Has anybody found a solution for this issue?
I am stuck with my portable and ReflectionX and HP-UX11 server without local console or grahical screen.

I checked for the network card settings and they seem ok. As a test I transferred a very big file from my portable to the server and it went very fast.

Any help very much appreciated

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

Hi all,

what Oracle version are you trying to install. On the CD of Oracle 9.2.0.5 or higher there are serveral patches you first have to install, then the Oracle Universal Installer (10.x) and with that installer start the new Oracle installation.
Perhaps I wrote the above for nothing if you are trying to install another (newer)version, but when your Oracle version is 9.2.0.1-4 I suggest downloading the newer images from otn.oracle.com or ordering a new cd-pack (donloading is faster!)

Cheers,

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

Hi,

Also I've noticed that the Oracle installer is a HUGE memory pig. Of course, having a *lot* of memory will help the install, but I've found that if you set up a lot of swap space - like 3 times RAM - the installer move a lot faster.
You can safely reduce the swap space post-install.

Re: Oracle installer starting too slow

The thing is, it is Oracle for OpenView and these CD are shipped by HP. I can't just install a newer Oracle Version since OVO might not want to install or there might be support issues.
I miss oracle 7 where you had a curses like installer. At least that thing worked (even on a stupid termninal)
