Hi,
Here we are facing a small problem in our live server. The server is L 2000,hp-ux 11.11 installed and oracle is Standard edition 8.1.7.The proble is that for most of the processes created by oracle user ;it is showing PPID as 1.What may be the probable cause ?
Thanx in advance.
With Regards,

Re: Oracle user showing PPID as 1
The most probable cause, is that you are running a Unix system :)
Oracle processes are created by client connection. They are not attached to any terminal, and do not depend of any father process. In a way, they act like daemons. These kind of process, without a parent process are adopted by init (parent of all process).
Regards,
Fred

Re: Oracle user showing PPID as 1
Saneesh
these processes have been created by the tns process (listener).
ps -ef | grep listener
this will give you PPID
this PPID is reused for spawned processes

Re: Oracle user showing PPID as 1
Its how you start oracle.
Generally, oracle is set to auto start at run level 3.
The startup script, which we name oracle, resides in /sbin/init.d
In that script has the following line.
/usr/bin/su - oracle -c "command to start oracle"
Note that init scripts are run by root, initial process id 1.
So the parent process id of any process spawned by the init scripts is 1.
This is not a problem. root or oracle can still kill the process.
What oracle can not do is issue a kill -9
A kill -9 says kill the process and its parent.
Nobody can kill process id 1.
