OS Installation Isuue

I am installing 11.23 on one of the VM guests

and cd 1 & 2 have been installed and now it is taking a very long time building the kernal...

======= 10/06/08 09:39:50 EDT END install AGENT SESSION (pid=13677)
(jobid=MAHPVM03B-0002)

* Software installation of this source (B3920 11.23 Foundation OE: DVD2)
is complete.
NOTE: tlinstall is searching filesystem - please be patient
NOTE: Successfully completed
* Loading_software: Complete
* Build_Kernel: Begin
* Building a new kernel using the command: "/usr/sbin/mk_kernel -f -o
/stand/vmunix".
NOTE: File system cache and transaction logging could not be disabled
for the '/stand' file system. The currently requested
operation may take much longer time than normal to complete.
* Building a new kernel for configuration 'import.config'...

It has been at this point since some 4 hours... I have never seen it taking such a long time at this point...

Re: OS Installation Isuue

Looked though some notes when we loaded from DVD and it took us just over 4 hours before it finished and came up.

Of course it will also depend on what version (Base vs MCOE) and the additional software you may have selected.

Hope that helps,
Rgrds,
Rita

Re: OS Installation Isuue

How many vCPUs does this VM have?

I only really touched some of the earlier versions of HPVM, but I do remember that it was generally faster to create the VMs as single vCPU VMs and complete the install - then make them multi vCPU VMs if they needed to be.

Re: OS Installation Isuue

It is Base OS and I have 2 VM in this blade server. On one of the VM's Ihave already Installed the same OS which took approx 4 hours to complete.

But this one is unusually taking more time.. till now it has been over 7 hours..

Is it ok If the reboot the box.. I do not know if it will start from the same point(ie building kernal ) or i do not know if the system will crash

Re: OS Installation Isuue

My IVMs no matter how many CPUs take less than 40 minutes to install new OS. ( this depends on how you are presenting the OS, vDVD, ISO, vMP dvd, ignite server, etc.)

Make sure you have enough RAM to install, must have at least 750MB.

Finally I ended up with this error

* /stand/current/system has been imported. The changes have been
applied to the currently running system.
ERROR: Could not make an executable kernel. An interactive shell will now be

and placed in /stand/vmunix, "exit" the shell.

Re: OS Installation Isuue

You MUST start over, the failure of the kernel build during install has left the installation un-usable..

Re: OS Installation Isuue

255.255.255.1 is NOT a valid subnet mask. Correct that and try again. You probably want 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask, but yet again, your network folks should tell you the correct value.

Re: OS Installation Isuue

The vmstatus for the first server looks fine, although IMHO would not use lvols on the vHosts root disk as backing stores.

As far as your other vGuest, you have the netmask set to an invalid value. 255.255.255.1 is not valid ( something like 255.255.255.0 would be valid ).

Re: OS Installation Isuue

Ok.... fixed it... It was a typo I have given in the subnet mask Ip... as 255.255.255.1 instead of 255.255.255.0
