Re: OS Upgrade
If I recall correctly, you can't "upgrade" directly from 11.0 to 11.23 - you would have to go to 11.11 first. That being the case and the standard recommendation being to cold install anyway, I would say you would want to cold install 11.23. Actually I wouldn't even bother with 11.23 and go directly to 11.31.
If you can isolate some disk space to do the install on, you can retain your original root volume as a fallback and just vgexport/vgimport all your data volumes into the new root volume - simple as that. If you can't find disk space, you'll have to backup the 11.0 root space in order to have a fallback but you'll still need to vgexport/vgimport your data volumes.

Re: OS Upgrade
As a side note, I would not EVER do an upgrade, unless you have too. A cold install is always a sure fire way to go. Upgrades can go haywire real fast.

Re: OS Upgrade
1. We have been advised to do Ignite Upgrades (is it viable at all at the first place? from 11.0 to 11.23?)
2. Could you confirm that it is not possible to upgrade from 11.0 to 11.23? can you please provide a reason (or a hp link that says that if possible?)
3. since we have 9 gig disks is this enough to do 11.23 install? (we have 2 9 gig internal desk and 20 9 gig disks on arrays)
Thanks
Mike.

Re: OS Upgrade
If you examine the Installation guide for 11iv2 (11.23) you can see the filesystem sizes that you will need and that it is NOT possible to upgrade from 11.0 to 11.23 directly. Your N-class must be a 64-bit capable server, too.

Re: OS Upgrade
THanks..i also noticed that the link has the following message..
NOTE: HP-UX 11i v2 is not supported on PA-RISC Workstations. HP recommends that PA-RISC Workstation customers use HP-UX 11i v1.
So does this mean that on the nclass it is not recommended to install 11.23?
Thanks
Mike.
