OS upgrade

Are there any implications for upgrading HPUX 10.20 to 11.11, on either HP9000 model K460 and K580?

Re: OS upgrade

Better take backup before you starting upgrade. HP also recommends to cold install 11.11 and then restore your app on to it because upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 would be painful with library files and you may have to resize vg00 also.

Re: OS upgrade

As stated, get backups.

Do not try to upgrade. There have been many reported problems in the past of trying to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00, and, you are going even further to 11.11

There have been general statements that doing upgrades from 1 major version to another (in this case, from 10 to 11) is not a recommended path.

Do a cold, fresh install.

Re: OS upgrade

Yes, there could be a LOT of implications.

Applications may no longer work. Some devices may no longer be supported. RAM usage may increase, thus causing memory issues.

There are a LOT of things to think about. If you haven't tested everything, I would strongly advise you to test the upgrade ( I would actually recommend a cold install rather than an upgrade since you are skipping a version) and test your applications and procedures.

This is not a process you want to just do. You must plan and test thoroughly.

Re: OS upgrade

When you mention "upgrade" from 10.20 that is almost certainly going to fail; however, if by upgrade you mean "cold install" then that will work. The good news is that these K-boxes will run either 32-bit or 64-bit 11.11. The "gotcha" may come in the form of a required firmware update before doing the install. Your first task is to check the firmware version on your K-box and then download and install the latest version, if needed.

After you get the OS installed, you can then vgimport any non-vg00 volume groups. Your 11.11 OS will have no trouble using the 10.20 filesystems and you have the option of updating the vxfs version using the vxupgrade command.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

check the OS support for K460 and K580:

as others told, better plan for cold installaion.

Re: OS upgrade

Note: after installing 11.11 (version 1 only, version 2 will not work on K-class boxes), make sure you have plenty of memory. If you're running databases, you'll need at least 4Gb. If your applications/database engines can run in the 64bit OS, then 6 to 8Gb would be better for these older machines.
