I'm running a D390 right now, and I need to port everything over to the newer server.
I'm wondering if it would be advisable to do a complete cold install of the OS, rather than trust what's on there?
Also is there anything that might make this less painful? The disks are arranged somewhat differently and I suspect the kernel is too, so I probably can just restore stuff from a D390 tape onto the rp5450 - right?
Any comments or suggestions welcome.

SolutionAs you're on support, you should be entitled to run 11i on there (which has a longer support life with HP).
If that's not a major concern to you, check what patch level is installed on the server to make sure it's up to date.
As far as restoring from the D390 is concerned, that depends on what you're planning to restore.
Standard directories (/home and so on) are normally safe to copy over, but if you have any compiled code, that will need to be recompiled on the 11 server to take advantage of the new libraries.

Re: over to a newer server
Congrats
Assuming your applications support it, I recommend the following:
Cold install of 11.11 11.00 only if required.
For sure cold install, don't trust whats there. My predecessor did that and it cost me an extra three hours of sleep last night.
This machine requires a 64 bit OS So there is a lot of pain required. You could conceivably do a ignite golden image of the D390 and transfer everything to the new machine 64 bit mode. All applications will ahve to be relinked and even though I've done it with oracle apps' Oracle has made clear to me they don't support Ignite imaging at all.
I recommend:
1)Cold install
2)Install all apps
3)Test data migration all apps
4)If all goes well, a data migration followed by a DNS/IP switch so that most users won't notice the different.
There is a liklihood that issues with client software will come up at section 3.

Re: over to a newer server
issue the command
#getconf KERNEL_BITS on D390 m/c, if it returns 64 then ignite is the best suit.if the command returns 32 then decide whether you want 11.0 or 11i. if you plan to stick to 11.0 use the preinstalled one by HP. if changed to 11i then cold install is the way.

Re: over to a newer server
My only app is a Progress database and that should move over easy enough; even if it needs a recompile, I've done that plenty.
I'm leaning toward a cold install and just moving over user accounts/homes/mail, and my localized admin scripts.

Re: over to a newer server
11.00 is having its last patch/core cd cut this March and support is gone either at the end of 2005 or 2006.
11.11 Is bigger, strong, more stable and has a lot more features. Totally different. 11.11 is still in the middle of its support cycle.
You can in many cases take 11.00 depots(non-patch) and swinstall them into 11.11 unmodified. If you have a choice, go with 11.11. As I said, you need to check with your application vendors for support.

Re: over to a newer server
On my list I see:
HP-UX 11i OE Update Release 12/2003
HP-UX 11i OE Update Release 09/2003
HP-UX 11i Operating Environment Release
HP-UX 11.0 OS Only
Is the update release listed at the top a full release or do I need that along with the third item on the list?
