PA-RISC to Itanium

We want to convert the cpu board in our rp machines to Itaniums. Do we have to re-install the operating system? We'll take all the info & advice you guys have. We have searched many places but can not find the answer to this question. Also need to know if the apps have to be compiled again. White papers are welcome!

Thanks,

Yes.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

The simple answer to the first question is unfortunately yes.
Even if you have 11.23 of HP-UX, the binaries for PARISC are different to Itanium, so when you convert your PARISC server to be an Integrity server, you need to reinstll the OS with the Itanium binaries.

As for the second question, that I would think is also a yes, but could be dependant uopon the application, and also PARISC compiled binaries for apps, can run using an Aries emulator on an Integrity server

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

An example of this is given in the folowing manual:
http://docs.hp.com/en/rp4440-rx4640_upgrade/rp4440-rx4640_upgrade.pdf
see page 7 for basic steps, you wuill note that step 11 is "Install OS"

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

I have read a lot of negitive information regarding the Aries emulator. Can anyone point out papers for this emulator?

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

The Aires emulator does an amazing job interpreting the binary codes from a PARISC system. Interpreters typically impact executable code between 3 to 8 times, that is, the same code take 3x to 8x longer to run with an interpreter. Aires is on the low side with about 3x-4x performance. NOTE: unless you are running code that solves differential equations, most PARISC database programs will run close to normal wall clock time. This is because a lot of the time is spent waiting for disk I/O.

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Court's link: #13: Why does ARIES patch installation or removal cause the HP-UX 11i system to reboot?

This point is no longer true for the latest patches. (I managed to convince them. :-)

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Shalom,

YES.

Very much so.

Some application vendors such as oracle have different install sets for the same OS Itanium versus PA-RISC.
