password problem

An easy one for you!

When a user wants to change his password as 'carol21' he gets this error:

"carol21 an english word and password may not be."

System is trusted.
why is he getting this error?

Re: password problem

My guess is carol is a person name the trusted will not allow an easy password like that for the hackers.

Re: password problem

Hi Rushank,

Do

#swlist -l product |grep -i spelling

If you don't find this product on the box, you will need to install it. It is part of Core OS bundle. Did you remove it by any chance?

Re: password problem

Hi (Again),

Even if you find it, try re-installing it.

Re: password problem

Sridhar,
swlist shows product spelling is installed.

Ken,

Since user is using some numeric character in the password, system should have accepted that.

ans surprisingly, if user tries to use password as 'carol12' system does take that!

What is the difference between 21 and 12

Re: password problem

HI Rushank,

Looks like your dictionaries got corrupted. Re-installing Spelling product should fix the issue.

Re: password problem

Sridhar,

I will try installing that product.

I checked the same password on two other servers and I get the same error. ( They are 10.20 and 11.00 and are trusted) Do you think file is corrupted in all the machines?

Does this install needs reboot??

Re: password problem

I must be missing something.

carol is an english word.

The reason you can't make your password carolanything is because you've set your system up that way.

I don't think anything is broken here.

Carol is an English proper name, in case we're not dealing with folks that know this.

Re: password problem

I tried to change my password to carol21 on both 10.20 and 11.0 and it didn't complain. Also tried the english words like test etc., and I didn't atleast get this English message.

This is not about user's inability to set the password but about the error message. I have seen this before sometime back where fixing the dictionaries fixed (supressed ?) the message. Could be when I updated the dictionaries, I got nothing ;-).

I would try installing the latest password patches just for the sake of messages. Or let me know the latest patchset that you installed on the box and I can compare them with mine and see if they exhibit the same behaviour.

Re: password problem

It looks like it is something to do with patch level. I tried it on multiple servers and result is same. I've few new servers and when I tried the same password on these systems it worked without any complaints.
The OS version is 11.00 on the new servers.
I'm just reluctant to install this product 'spelling' on a production server.

Carol21 is the only name it's having problem, I also tried with some "english text" passwords and it worked. In fact I tried carol20 , carol12.. all worked well, but for some reason it does not like 'carol21'
