Password sync

We are running a samba server on HP-UX 11 in a mixed Novell windows 2000 environment.

We are currently running it as a PDC so that we can sync the UNIX/samba passwords with the Novell and windows passwords. I would like to down grade the samba server from a pdc to a bdc or member server. Is there a secure way to sync the passwords using LDAP or kerberous ?
