You can activate the password, (should it need activating) by forcing a change from root user. The '*' normally implies that the systems is trusted so further security is added, which replaces the normally encrypted passwd with a shadow passwd file in the tcb directory.

To change the password from root you would issue the command:
passwd
You will need to enter the new password twice, if the system is trusted you will need some numbers or special characters.

A Trusted System can be easily changed back to a standard HP-UX system by using the Actions menu in any of the SAM Auditing subareas.
