Patch checking

I talked to a sys admin tech today who gave me a command that would allow me to find out vhat version of a file was installed as a result of a patch. For example, I am getting ready to apply a Support Plus update CD to my system tommorow and he had me check what version of the '/usr/sbin/cleanup' command I had, so that I would make sure that the cleanup ran o.k. prior to the update.

The net result of the command was that it showed the file and in () it showed the patch the applied the update. I believe in this case I had (PHCO_15530) followed by $Date 99/08/10$

I'm forgot to write the command down and would like to know what it was.

Can anyone help me?

Re: Patch checking

The command I think you are looking for is 'what'.

Syntax:

# what filename

For more information:

# man what

Re: Patch checking

I couldn't resist this:

My answer sounds like an Abbott and Costello routine.

"I'm looking for a command."

"The command you're looking for is 'what'."

"That's what I want to know. What is the command I'm looking for."

"Exactly."

(Sorry for bad take-off of their "Who's on First" routine, but I couldn't resist.)

Re: Patch checking

I gave you an 8 for the first answer, but had to give you 10 for the quick thinking on the Abbott and Costello routine.

Re: Patch checking

This one (see attachment) is a little longer than Patrick's. It is rather artificial, but, IMO, still funny.

[Please no points (i.e. 0 or N/A) for this.]
