Solution
These are the procedures that I follow for installing patches.
First create a make_recovery tape (ignite tape)
e.g. assuming your tape drive is /dev/rmt/0m, and note the no-rewind usage
# make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn
Run the swinstall program. If the system requires a reboot for installing a patch or a number of patches the system will tell you during the analysis phase. If you've not used 'swinstall' before make sure you run the program with no options, that way it's runs interactively. Generally speaking the patches that have a prefix of PHKL and PHNE will require a reboot.

Re: Patch enquiry problem II
Mr. Lau,
To add to the previous response, if you need to know ahead of time if installation of a patch requires a system reboot, you can look at the patch text. There is a section that reads "Automatic Reboot?". If the answer is "yes", then a reboot is required. If the answer is "no", then a reboot is *probably* not necessary.
You will also want to check the special installation instructions, as well. Some patches won't require a reboot, but some changes may not take effect until after the system is rebooted.
Best Regards,
Dave
