patching through console

While applying patches is it desirable to login to console instead of terminal ?

Re: patching through console

hi,

i apply patches from console as well as from a telnet/ssh session. even if the patch/es requires a reboot.

important thing if the patch requires a reboot is to shutdown all apps and database first before installing. also perform a make_tape_recovery before all this, just in case ....

Re: patching through console

Hi Shiv,

You can apply the patches thru console or terminal. But by using the console, you can additional features which is you can see the whole process on your system when the system shutdown & startup until the system go back to the login prompt.

As Joseph informed to you, you need to make sure all application and database is shutdown when you applying the patches. And DO NOT forget to have a good backup plus an Ignite/UX's backup.

Hope this information can help you.

Re: patching through console

hi,

Applying patches through the console is indeed the preferred way for obvious reasons.

First of all, some messages may be echoed to the console...

Also, imagine that you are at a remote site and you install a patch that requires a reboot and then something goes wrong and you can no longer connect. e.g. Network problem, problem with patch, etc

If you are near the server, you can intervene more rapidly.

There is also the possibility of using the LAN/WEB console though the network and do the same thing as if you are working on the console itself!

hope this helps too!

kind regards

Re: patching through console

Hi Shiv,
As Yogee told, you can use the LAN/WEB console of your GSP . This is the best way to do .
Also don't forget to take backup of existing kernel, so that in case of any problem, you will have a good one.

If server is not coming up with new kernel, you need console access to boot from different kernel.
