PDF - Product Description Files - Replace?

I have some HP-UX 10.20 systems which have security checks built around the pdf function.
In the man page for pdf it says that use of pdf is not recommended and you should use sd.

How do you use SD to provide similar functionality?
i.e. create details of lists of files, report differences with previously created lists.

Does anyone have any other methods of achieving a similar result?

I need to provide this functionality on HP-UX 10.20, HP-UX 11.0 and AIX.
