PHKL_18543 question

Hi, I am trying to apply PHKL_25906 and found out that the installation failed because the swagent.log said: "The software "PHKL_18543.CORE2-KRN,l=/,r=1.0" is not in the correct state (AVAILABLE, INSTALLED, or CONFIGURED). You will need to recopy, reinstall or configure this software before operating on software that depends on it."

With swlist, I can find that that patch PHKL_18543 has already been installed. So when I tried to reinstall it, I ran into the following message:
" The patch match operation failed to find patches for target software on 'my_machine' which passed the filter."

I suppose then the reinstall could not go on because it had already found another copy of PHKL_18543 there. So, right now, I am stuck at this point and I wonder if there is any way to tweak the PHKL_18543 patch so that I can apply other patches that depend on it.

Thanks.

Lance

Re: PHKL_18543 question

Hi Lance,

You can reinstall a patch if required. To do that, in the swinstall interactive window, go to options and select "X" the option "reinstall filesets even if exits"

Hope this helps.

Re: PHKL_18543 question

You have got to be REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY CAREFUL with this patch. This is a PATCH FROM HELL!!!!!!!

Do NOT re-install this patch. If you have, take a look at this TKB document (Doc ID KBRC00001601) on how to recover:

Re: PHKL_18543 question

Hi,

This is the kernel patch from hell. DO NOT TRY TO RE-INSTALL IT..................

I did this once and had to restore my system from my make_recovery tape.

BTW Did you create one prior to attempting to install these other patches?

Suggest you have two just in case.

# make_tape_recovery -x inc=entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn

Re: PHKL_18543 question

Grettings,

Patrick and Michael are correct. This is what's called a line in the sand patch (aka patch from hell). Don't ever 'reinstall' it unless you like restoring on the week-ends. You can select it from swinstall but don't check the option to reinstall=true. I would check with swconfig \* to get filesets configured first and see if that fixes the problem.

Re: PHKL_18543 question

Hi, thanks for the responses, as always. Fortunately this time, there is not enough space in the /stand directory and I have to ask for permission to continue. I guess then I will have to drop this machine unless the curator wants to do that himself.

Re: PHKL_18543 question

Lance,

I am in full agreement with the guys above about the 'cruelty of this patch' !!

When you or your curator are ready to take this issue on...do not begin alone. You might want to search these forums for PHKL_18543 and you will find many tales about it..
My suggestion is to open a call with HP Support and have them help you through ...believe me, it will save you hours of headaches.

Rita
