ping problem

Has anyone experienced problems with ping after installing PHNE_24260 (ping cumulative patch)? The reason I ask is because since installing this patch I've received reports about false alarms from an alarm-generating script (which has worked fine for 6 months) using ping [hostname] -n 2.

Re: ping problem

Hi Jim,

Did you have PHNE_19566 installed? It (and the superseeding PHNE_24260) change the behavior of -n as well as the return code. See http://us-support2.external.hp.com/wpsl/bin/doc.pl/screen=wpslDisplayPatch/sid=3701b1541494d136ee

You may need to re-visit your alarm-generating script.

Re: ping problem

Hi Darrell

Patch PHNE_19566 was installed previously. I have tested manually with ping from the server and have found that packets are dropped sometimes, but seemingly only when using the -n parameter. A 'ping hostname' sent and received 100 packets 3 times in a row, while a 'ping hostname -n 2' dropped 1 packet 3 out of 10 times. Performing the same testing from another server that has the same ping patch gives no problem. Even pinging the problem server from the other server gives no problem. Any theories?

Thanks for the responses.
I have swremoved the ping patch PHNE_24260 and the problem has disappeared.
