Planning for an upgrade in a network infrastructure (WAN).
Dear all,
-
We are currently planning the upgrade of our communication network connecting our two production site. Our WAN connects these two sites using a Frame Relay connection of 2x128Kbits/s (CIR=16Kbits). We are planning to move to leased line configuration with overall bandwidth capacity of 2Mbits/s.
-
We believe that we will have to upgrade our current routers which are currently as follows:
-
Site 1: HP J3138A Router (68030) processor (revision L) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory
Site 2: cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision N) with 2048K/2048K bytes of memory.
-
Are there any other issues that we have to take into consideration?
-
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
-
best regards
Yogeeraj

Re: Planning for an upgrade in a network infrastructure (WAN).
I will assume you are upgrading to Cisco hardware. Even if you are keeping your current hardware, here is a tip.
Cisco Admins are like small children in some cases. They need constant reminders that HP-9000 servers with HP NIC's must not be set to auto negotiate on the switch port.
This leads to speed and throughput problmes. I have had a half dozen conversations with my admin over the past four years, yet just last week, the result of an upgrade, a production box was getting lousey throughput and the switch port setting was once again auto negotiate.
In 2001 while I was in Israel, all our HP boxes went down. Management was sure we'd been hacked and changed the root password.
No. The switch port settings on an old Envisex workstation were set to 100 BaseT autonegotiate while it was running. It can't be set to anything but 10 BaseT explicit. It has heavy glance sessions monitoring performance on all of our other boxes. They all went down.
So, keep on those switch administrators and when they say they are done, run lanadmin -x and transfer a big file with sftp or ftp to test it.
Maybe its just my Network admin, but something happens every upgrade.
BTW, if you HP boxes have HP 1000 BaseT cards, those switch settings MUST be autonegotiate. Go figure.

Re: Planning for an upgrade in a network infrastructure (WAN).
hi SEP,
-
thanks for the reply...
-
We have noted your observations, we are more concerned about the WAN side though...
-
More feedbacks will be most appreciated.

best regards
