Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

A list. Gosh.

1) Performance needs to be addressed. I know it is, but please let us know when you think its resolved so we can test.
2) Wider browswer support. Big time website, choice of browser is an important issue. I don't propose a lot of resources, just a simple list of browsers to test basic functionality.
3) Search engine. I had a talk with Bill Hassell about the general hp search engine. Now I see there seem to be special itrc search engines. I'm now officially confused. What are they, how do they work and which should I use under certain circumstances.

Fun note: JRF got 30 points today. Neat trick a year after his last post. I really enjoyed all my interaction with him. Good job on whoever is catching up with assignment.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Hey Dan,

I was not able to access the Forums for 3-4 hours tonight (from about 5:45PM until about 9:40 central time).

I kept getting "redirection limit exceeded" errors. I could see the browser flipping between the forums.itrc.hp.com and forums1.itrc.hp.com servers. It looks like your redirector got really confused for a while.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Dan,

My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of
the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent
dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical
because much of it has been lost.

2) Done, thanks!
Clarify more distinctly the meaning of the new message button within a thread
so it will no longer be confused with the reply button.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Done, thanks!
Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

7) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones
are.

8) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

9) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by
setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

10) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

11) A new hat for the 50,000 point level.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Dan,

And, as far as the "redirection limit exceeded" errors are concerned, I've been getting those off and on for quite some time (years?). Yesterday, I was getting them so I switched from HP-UX/Netscape to Windoze/Exploder and things were fine there. After 10 minutes or so I was able to go back to HP-UX/Netscape.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Hey Dan,

I guess I should elaborate on my problems from last night. I got those using Firefox 0.9.3 and Opera 7.54. I absolutely positively refuse to use Internet Exploder at home unless there is really no other option.

Ditto to firefox here.
I saw the exact same thing last night.

Let me confirm the redirect issue with Mozilla on Linux, Firefox on Windows 2003 Server.

I also did not bother with IE

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Not like I think you want. But each forum category has a top rank list posted in the upper right corner. For OpenVMS, that would be at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=288
where you can read
top members
1 Martin P.J. Zinser 1950 pts.
2 Ian Miller 1838 pts.
3 Antoniov 1596 pts.
4 Uwe Zessin 1550 pts.
5 Willem Grooters 1143 pts.
6 Jan van den Ende 945 pts.
7 Lokesh 939 pts.
8 Wim Van den Wyngaert 865 pts.
9 John Gillings 813 pts.
10 Hein van den Heuvel 684 pts.

The points in these lists only reflect the points in that category

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - September 2004!

Merijn,
thank you for your response.
My curiosity is not about points but how many posts. Before merge Compaq/HP the Vms operating system has leaved in desert whilel now many people are writing about it.

Harry's issue is resulting in a critical problem for us right now. We are having a production java exception and are trying to run a search and see if any other HP-UX folks got it.

Same response here IE 5.5.

Help.
