Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

Hi All,

Please submit the highlights and successes you have had while using the ITRC Forums. This ongoing thread tries to capture the successes of forums members. For example, have you:

1. Posted a question and received a key answer that solved your problem.
2. Viewed a message thread that had a solution to a problem you were trying to solve.
3. Found the Forums to be of particular help in sharing information, exchanging best practices, or saving you time.

I'd really like to hear from everyone -- your circumstances, the issues, the outcome, who was of help, time saved, etc.!

If you have examples to share, please provide the URL of the thread if possible. Thanks in advance for your input!

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

Dan,

Using the forums has defiantly been a time saver for me. I???ve used to resolve my of my past issues along with simple questions I had about omniback and OVO. These would have taken me much more time to research and resolve without this forum. Many of my questions were answered within just a few minutes!

Also, I would like to thank

A. Clay Stephenson
Sridhar Bhaskarla
S.K. Chan
pap
And
Jeff Schussele

And many other of the active users of these fine forums.

Thanks again,

-Yates

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

HI,

i reacently had a problem with a ATL P1000 Jukebox which stoped working with our Legato Networker. Our support said that this is a problem of the OS which "lost" its driver to access the jukebox.

As i never had installed a jukebox (this one was here befor me), i didn't really know what he was talking about.

But a search in this forum for "sctl" and some reading really cleard things up for me. Especially the threads http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x397706295e00d6118ff40090279cd0f9,00.html
and
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xfd920559ff7cd4118fef0090279cd0f9,00.html
helped me a lot. (Thanks to Michael Tully and Alex Glennie).

This took me only 15 Minutes of reading and some time of testing what i have learnd.

It would have taken me several more minutes to explain this to our (so called) support.

This forum is great.

Regards Stefan

Dan,

My biggest success was becoming active in the forums. I've learned so much over the last month and was pleased to feel that I contributed a little bit, too. This is truly a great resource.

Thanks,

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

Recent success: swapon though there was a file system on a disk. I spent 2 days looking for a way to remove it. Got fed up & posted qusetion at 5PM. The next morning there were about 5 suggestions. None of them were in any of my books, and the first one did the trick.

You guys have helped me set up sendmail and NTP. You showed me how to send mail attachments via MIME. You've helped me thru some of the bumps of using omniback & managex.

Trolling thru the forums has given me dozens of good tips that I have put in my top-secret "Trick them into thinking you know what you're doing" folder.

These forums are as good as paid s/w support, except I cant rant & rave about how I'm the customer.....

My thanks go to all who put their time into the forums. And a note to the higher-ups at HP: These forums are worthwhile & generate a lot of Good Will in the user community. If you feel the need to cut back on the forums, you do so at your Own Peril.

Thank you for your attention.

Hi Dan,
Yesterday, I was installing software bundle on one important system c180 10.20. swinstall fails while building kernal.

This time I didn't waste any time. open up my old HP training class notes. Open up itrc and serch for it on technical document and beleive it or not I did not found anything valuable. Then I search on forums.

I got enough information that saves my day.

Thanks Chan, Eran, Bill Hassell.

These are great examples of how the ITRC Forums are a valuable tool -- I enjoy hearing about successes like those from Sachin, Stefan and Pete. They wouldn't happen without great contributions from the likes of Clay, Jeff, Wodisch, S.K. Chan, etc. Keep up the great community spirit!

In preparing to upgrade to HPUX 11.11 I was able to find threads of discussions regarding the usage of vgexport/vgimport in OS migration.

I don't do LVM management too much, so finding information on these procedures saved me a lot of time reading through the "man" pages.

I didn't even have to post a question, since the search found exactly what I needed.

This is a great place for HPUX admins to hangout.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

Dan,

Just the other day I got called and they asked a question I did not have the answer for. I logged a call to support, and while waiting for them, I found the answer on the forum. This happens all the time.

I spend plenty of time reading posts and learning/reviewing things. I am pretty busy here, but it is also nice to help people out once in a while. (Although not at the rate of some of these other guys.)

I have a question: our IA/32 guys use compaq equipment almost exclusively for their stuff. Is there going to be a forum for them here?

Just a thought.

Hi John,

Thanks for the post....regarding your IA/32 question, I haven't heard anything definitive in terms of integrating what used to be 'compaq' products into these forums. When I learn of more, I will be sure to share it.

Thanks,

Hi Procura/Dan,

I guess I'm a victim of the J/M page syndrome as Procura's post is ALWAYS *old* when it comes to my user data. It shows myself as well as JRF having last post dates of 4/22 when my last post was this Fri 5/10. And I'm sure JRF was also posting.
Not a big deal...just pointing it out.
Any idea when this "bug" will be cleared?

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

Jeff, I checked, you're right. Even though wget's timeout is 15 minutes, wget first gets 25k of intro data and than waits for the user list. Since wget already got data, the default timeout is not used, but it bails out sooner. Both 'j' and 'm' are invalid in my statistics.

Dan, can we still expect a monthly statistics thread? Do you have public upload space for us so we can place statistics somewhere (so we don't hit the truncation of the attachments, which happened again :[ )
BTW I'm using Opera in IE identification (I don't like that, but otherwise I cannot use the forum).

Given that m and j are bogus, the country list (was truncated from the previous post) will be unreliable too :-P

Jeff...the J and M issue will be cleared up in next release. The two lists need to be into two pieces. Don't quote me, but we're talking about 8-10 weeks out.

procura: nice lists. Yes, I need to publish some stats for this month. Standby. Unfortunately, we don't have any public space to load your data into.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes - May 2002

I find the forums especially useful for tips on how to perform those admin tasks that only come up once in a while - you know, the ones that you don't do often enough to really feel comfortable with all the details.

Instead of lots of digging through documentation and man pages, I search for forum threads with an exact, step-by-step process for my current task. I've never yet failed to find relevant information from those who have "been there, done that".

Best of all, for this type of assistance, the forums search is often faster than calling up paid software support.
