Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan:

I am still convinced that the Forum Search engine needs some *major* work. I don't think its ability to handle boolean logic is very good at all. I perceive part of the problem to occur if you start a search, receive some results, and then *change* some of the search keywords. You will invariably find the new results constaining elements that have *no* bearing to *either* operand.

In addition, on October 3rd (above), I indicated that after the last database conversion that it appears that the search engine has substantially less information to deliver.

Has the volume of available search data been reduced or the engine throttled to abandon searching based on the time when a post was last updated?

I would appreciate a definitive answer. May I have your comments, please?

With my regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello again, Dan,

here I am back, to cry a little bit about the loss of my
favourite complaint for the "newbies":
did you use the "search" today?

And I cannot use it anymore, as the "search" engine is
so restricted, that I cannot even find my own reply to
a thread about extending the root-fs/-lv online - which
does (or did?) exist - but will not be found any longer :-(

I do strongly believe that the "search" is one of the most
important features of the whole forums and now we lost
it!!!
pls, please, Please, PLEASE give it back to us!

Thanks in advance,
Wodisch
PS: Thank you, JRF! Did you know that *own* almost 1/18th of ALL points ever spent?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Dan,

I'm REALLY confused here!!! And I promise I haven't been drinking this morning either (approx. 12:30 PM Central 10/6/2001).

There was a question I answered earlier this morning (aobut an hour ago or so) asking about where to get a pre-compiled version of the gcc compilers. I answered with a couple of links embedded.

When I just came back to the Forums, there is no evidence of that quesion and when I look at my profile, it is not in my last 5 posts list.

What's up with that? As I said I'm really confused.

By the way, the question I swear I saw and answered was in the HPUX -> General section.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Patrick is right, I have added this weekend two answers, one in management software/It service management and in management software/performance management . The answer in IT Service Management is fully readable still, but my answer in the performance management section is disappeared!!!

How could this happen?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan,

Please do something about the search engine in the forums. The situation is pretty bad. The results that come up have no relation to what i am searching for.

I am sure i am not the only one seeing this and i am pretty sure this is leading to a lot of frustration.

Hi Dan,

This one was a little strange. I answered the
below post, but after doing so I noticed that
the date of the posting was April 9, 2001,
but this appears as being posted today
originally in HPUX planning but moved to
storage.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello,
A suggestion from my side.
Whenever someone clicks a forum discussion link,it turns red.
So even if someone has posted answers to that particular discussion the colour doesn't change.
It confuses me as whether I have read the question before!!
Sometimes I read the same discussion twice as I can't count be counting the replies for that particular discussion.
My suggestion is that if we click on a query,it should turn red as it is now.But when someone replies to the query after I read ,the color should again turn blue,so that it can be figured out
as some extra answers are posted for that particular question.

Thanks

well, Mister Manikandan,

this is normal Internet Explorer (netscape too, I guess) behaviour and not HP forum issue.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Dan,

the "search" is getting funnier (lack of an
appropriate technical term for it, as I am not
a native speaker - think of something which is
getting on you nerves) every day:

After replying to some questions (and it did
work) I tried the search, again, and guess what?
It (well, the forums server) tried to log me
in, could NOT do it, and posted an error about
that. The navigation bar on the left (is that
its name?) still showed "Welcome, Wodisch",
and when I tried to "logout" then, I got to the
"search" dialog.

Why does the search try to re-login me, or why
does it even check (as I thought reading the
forums would be essentially free and anonymous)
about it?

Oh, since then I have NOT logged in again, so
for being able to post this reply (still using
the same IE5/W2K session) my login seems to be
valid...

You have got me on that - I do NOT understand
it, really.

AND it does still only show up to 50 results.

And the "YAER" of the day (mine, at least) is
Can we have a "FAQ" area on the right hand side
right were the "all members" and "points" stuff
is, please? Organised like the other areas, so
we can post to it? Then we would be able to
fill in all those questions asked most often...

If the users/readers of those "FAW" postings
could actually click on some buttons like
"solved my problem", "helpful", "useless"
and your web-designers could sort these pages
according to those "reader-points", then those
"FAQ" pages would represent the most urgent
problems automatically... (and you would not
have to fix the "search" ;-) since we could
use the "FAQ" instead.
Thinking about it, why not some buttons for
EVERY question page, to promote it to the FAQ?

Tired,
Wodisch

Could you consider adding a patch management strategy area to the Business Issues area (as opposed to the patches one in HPUX?)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

well, this one has priority minus ten:

Now that I finally received my first hat, I discovered something. When I hover above my hat I'll get the ALT-image tag: "this user has accumulated 250 or more points" (same for other hats/caps/crowns). When I hover legend on the left side of the screen, the ALT-image tag is "ITRC Pro". The legend explains already that I earned 250 points, so why not using ITRC Pro as tag?

Just a minus ten priority addition from an user who has accumulated 250 or more points.

I had an answer bookmarked, and it used to be available:

Was it deleted?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Dan,

the forums were pretty slow this week, again.
Then I had a lot of the "re-login" problems,
especially when "searching": the forums server
tried to re-login me, could not do it, complaint, I tried to login, could not, I tried
to LOGOUT, could not, tried the american login,
did not work - and then I was still logged in!
And the "search" dialog appeared.
But then I got a *new* message about "ECS meta"
something..., back and re-search did work,
though.

Often working as a trainerfor hp, I usually try
to show the ITRC and the forums to the people
attending those trainings, and it is more than
a little bit embarrasing to show something NOT
working (at an HP site!).
Should I not recommend the ITRC for the time
being? Will I get a notification when I can
start recommending and demonstrating the ITRC,
again?

Oh, and I do feel kind of "left alone" when
you do not answer on this thread :-(
If what we post is not important any longer
then we do not have to continue with it...

Kinda feeling sad,
Wodisch
