Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

It's really a pain if I can not remove or edit the reply I submitted wrongly.

Also I want to reply the question on the same web page but not another new one so that I can see the above messages clearly when replying.

At last, I want to quote others' words automatically by one click but not 'Selection -> Ctrl+V -> Ctrl+C'.
When going with others together, I can always find my adviser among them. (三人行必有我师也)

Hi Dan.

Could you please check:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x3f2a9607df6ed711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

This is actually the continuation of:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xa81e9607df6ed711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

which is continued there. I think it was posted by mistake because was 'Post new thread' instead of 'Replay' by the new user.
I think it could be remove to clean the situation where to post all answers.

However mayby should be consulted with the author?
Thanks.

Good luck

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

And - while complaining - I'd like to see the dates `normal' and not in the braindead US format. 17-04-2003.

If that's too hard, at least use something less confusing

2003-04-17 or even 20030417

123 is not twohundredthirteen

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi Dan:

I believe that at one time the Forum engine was able to reject duplicate submisssions. That is, if I submitted an identical response twice or even three times by pressing the submit button successively, then all but one post would be rejected. If indeed that was ever the case, it's broken:

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

For Merijn:

I agree that dates should be less ambiguously represented by including the century and year:

e.g. 04/17/2003 instead of 04/17/03 (mm/dd/yy).

It is United States (US) standard to use MMDDYY and I believe European standard to reverse the day and month to DDMMYY, if I recall correctly.

My question is what's "braindead US format"?

Regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Dan,

I always have problems with "search" page from the hp-ux Forums page. When I click on search I get:
HTTP 400 - Bad Request on Internet Explorer
or
nothing will come up.

Sometimes I have to close the IE and open multiple times. I think there is some incompatibility with IE. Will you please findout more. Search page is very important for us.

Thanks

Hi Dan,
Please delete the duplicate replies that were mine from this thread. Points were assigned to the same reply, which is not how it should be :)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Ahhh Merijn,

The BIG question is: What is normal? What is normal to me is "braindead US" to you. I have always thought that the European format was strange. Why would you want the day before the month? ;)

I personally have no problem with the dates as they are. ;)

Dan -- Would it be possible to somehow allow us to choose the date format we want to see? It would give Merijn the chance to choose the European format (DD/MM/YY) and I could stick with the braindead US format (MM/DD/YY).

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Why it is strange? because it is - for as far as I know - the only entity that is not sorted small(DD)-to-large(YYYY) or back, but is in fact unsortable at all.

I don't care if 20030417 is better or worse than 17042003, but at least the elements within the entity have a logical small-to-large or large to small (weighted) value, just like numbers: 123 is worldwide recognized as onehundredandtwentythree (though some languages, like dutch and norwegian are so stupid to say onehundredthreeandtwenty. Bizarre, and just as stupid as the written date system in the US, so I'm not being discriminating)

Wheesh, that clears my mind.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Ok. My turn to get in on the date issue.

Merijn,

I hate to say it but these forums are currently hosted in the USA and that means that we are rather partial to the ???Braindead US??? manner of placing the month first, the day second and that year last. That is all of the ???weight??? that we need to be comfortable with it.

Since you have grown up seeing a different format, you will be more comfortable seeing it in that manner than you will be seeing it our way.

Which is ???right??? and which is ???wrong????

The only true answer to that depends on where you are in the world.

Personally I am still rather partial to the way it is right this minute and would hate to see it change. For me it would do nothing but confuse things even more than they are right now.

**I now return the soapbox to it???s previous place so that the next person may use it**

John, was just looking at your profile. Apart from the quote i found this interesting -

"This member has assigned points to 228 of 212 responses to his/her questions."

How did you manage to assign points to more no. of responses than you've actually got?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi,

I have some ideas to solve the Great Date Dilemma.

We could adopt an international, United Nations type format where
the date format for the forum rotates on a monthly basis. One month
it could be the U.S. format, and the next month it could be the Dutch
format. [Of course, the French could always veto the format for any
month.] I wonder what date format they use in Madagascar? I wonder if
they still call it Madagascar?

Or, we could persuade the HP folks to modify the forum code so that each
forum user could select the date format in their profile [as suggested by
a previous poster]. I'm sure this wouldn't slow down the forum much at all,
especially since there are brief periods when forum response times are best
measured with a calendar anyway. ;)

Perhaps we should be true Unix geeks and do away with the date formats,
and just display them as the number of seconds since Jan. 1, 1970. Or
1 Jan. 1970. Or 1970, 1 Jan. Oh, here we go again. The operating system
is perfectly content with just the number of seconds since that date. Why
shouldn't we be happy with it also?

I'd like to do away with all the dates, and replace them with "Today",
"Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", and finally "older than Bob Hope".

Then again, we could combine the Great Date Dilemma with the
Great Points Debate, and only allow people to see dates if they have
assigned points.

In case the email didn't go through.

I personally got 404 HTTP page not found while trying to post between 2:30 p.m. Central and 11:35 p.m. Central yesterday.

Just thought someone might want to know.

and during the same period there were a number of postings of the same question. "Networkaccess to Omniback"

Does the forum reject png's?

First was posted with Opera, second with mozilla. If you can replace them with the correct versions, I can mail them to you. Next time, I'll try jpg
